Sortelha: Medieval Paths and Granite Landscape

Sortelha combines a fortified medieval settlement with impressive paths and a landscape of granite rocks and chestnut forests. From the higher part of the settlement, panoramic views extend across the Cova da Beira and the Serra da Estrela. This gives the town different starting points for your journey: you can explore historical details, discover a route on foot or simply take in the character of the landscape.

Through Gates, Lanes and Medieval History

Access to Sortelha is through a Gothic gate. Above it is the Varanda de Pilatos, with machicolations. Within the walls, the settlement preserves the layout of its 16th-century houses and lanes. The architecture of the rural granite houses also helps ensure that the medieval character of the town remains recognisable to this day.

A cistern has been preserved in Sortelha Castle. Another special detail can be found on the right door jamb of the Porta Nova: carved there are the Côvado measure, measuring 67 cm or three handbreadths, and the Vara measure, measuring 110 cm or five handbreadths. These measures were used to standardise the cloth sold at the market. Such details make a walk through Sortelha a voyage of discovery for children too, where not only major buildings but also unusual traces of everyday life in the past are interesting.

Old Paths and Wide Views over the Landscape

Those wishing to explore Sortelha on foot can follow the PR7 – Caminho Histórico de Sortelha. The route begins by crossing the village and continues outside the walls along medieval paving and an old path downhill. The PR7 also leads to the Minas da Bica. A preserved section of the medieval paving is approximately 300 metres long and 5 metres wide.

Near Sortelha, you can also follow an old Roman-medieval route on foot, along which pilgrims travelled to Santiago de Compostela. The combination of a fortified town, historic paths and open countryside gives the journey a clear focus between culture and physical activity. For a broader tour, a cycling route begins in Sabugal and passes through five medieval towns: Sortelha, Vila do Touro, Vilar Maior and Alfaiates.

Churches, Rock-Cut Tombs and Regional Traditions

The Igreja Matriz is dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Neves. Numerous traces of tombs carved into the rock have been preserved around the churches of Sortelha, particularly outside the gates at the Igreja da Misericórdia. The Igreja da Misericórdia is also called Igreja de Santa Rita or Igreja de São João. It was built at the beginning of the 14th century and is associated with a necropolis, some of whose 133 identified rock-cut tombs are visible. The former Hospital da Misericórdia is also located near the Porta Nova at Largo de Santa Rita.

The regional craft tradition is also part of the townscape. Bracejo basketware is often offered for sale in Sortelha; this activity is typical of the freguesia. The traditional production “Bracejo de Sortelha – Sabugal” is registered in the national register as certified traditional craft production.

The event Muralhas com História was held again by the Município do Sabugal from 19 to 21 September 2025 in the Aldeia Histórica de Sortelha. The programme included, among other things, a historical re-enactment, a medieval market, a military camp, crafts and historical ways of life, falconry, farm animals, medieval music, a children’s programme, circus arts, foot and horseback weapons tournaments, and medieval games.
