Castelo Mendo lies on a hill approximately 800 metres high and combines an impressive landscape with an unusually rich history. From here, the view stretches across the Ribeira dos Cadelos to the River Côa at Porto de S. Miguel. Miguel follows a path where the medieval paving has been preserved. The PR2 ALM | Castelo Mendo circular trail offers a specific way to do this. It passes the medieval paved road, the castle, a viewpoint, the ruins of the Igreja de Santa Maria, the berrões of Castelo Mendo and the Pontão de S. Miguel. The route is described as a circular walk and is considered accessible to almost everyone. This allows you to choose a hike that connects several different stops without having to view the cultural attractions separately.

Castle, gates and historic traces

The foundation of the first castle of Castelo Mendo is attributed to the late 12th century. The Porta da Vila forms the main entrance to the fortified settlement. Two towers flank the gate; outside stand two zoomorphic sculptures of the Vettones, known as berrões. To the west of Castelo Mendo, the ruins of the Torre de Menagem have also been preserved. Those interested in medieval settlement structures, fortifications and unusual stone representations can combine these points into their own tour of the village.

One of the notable individual historic features is the Pelourinho. It is seven metres high and considered one of the tallest in Beira Interior. It was erected around 1510 as a cage-style pillory with an octagonal platform and an octagonal column. The Menda sculpture also tells a story of local tradition: it is set into the wall of the Casa da Menda, a former hayloft.

Churches and sacred art

The Igreja de São Vicente, also known as the Igreja da Misericórdia, dates back to the 13th century and has Romanesque origins. Inside, it preserves a wooden Alfarge ceiling, old tomb slabs and a chalice-shaped baptismal font. The Igreja de São Pedro has been documented since 1321 and is closely associated with the urban expansion of Castelo Mendo’s new castle courtyard. Its single-nave layout, a wooden false barrel vault and gilded wooden altarpieces give it a distinctive character.

Another point of reference is the Castelo Mendo Tourist Office, with its permanent exhibition “O Mundo Rural e a Arte Sacra”. This allows you to explore the history of the village both in public spaces and through rural and sacred themes. The former free fair, established by the medieval Foral of Castelo Mendo, was held three times a year: at Easter and on the feast days of São João and São Miguel. Each fair lasted eight days and forms part of the village’s historic character.
