Budens – Culture, Circular Trails and Nature in the Surrounding Area

Budens offers cultural history in the village and a variety of destinations in the surrounding area. Culture and History in Budens

The Igreja de São Sebastião is a single-nave religious building from the 16th century dedicated to Saint Sebastian. Inside, there are two intricately crafted Manueline holy-water stoups from the 16th century. The portal is also particularly striking: it bears the year 1762 and is considered one of the finest examples of 18th-century sculpture in the Algarve.

The Ermida de Santo António is another interesting building in the village. It is located on the edge of the village of Budens, on a church square with a staircase. Above the altar area, the chapel has a tiled vault. It was probably built in the 17th century and affiliated with the parish of Budens. The Capela de Santo António was an important place of faith for the inhabitants and was used for baptisms and weddings in earlier times.

Another destination is the Moinho da Torre. The mill was in operation until 1958, was reconstructed in the 21st century and remains fully functional. Its circular stone architecture, two storeys and walls up to 95 cm thick give the building a distinctive appearance. At the Fonte Milenar, you can see a rectangular red-sandstone watering trough for livestock; sharpening marks from sharpening axe blades can also be seen there. The spring is accessible on foot, by bicycle and by car. A few dozen metres to the south are Roman basins that were probably part of a thermal complex.

Circular Trails for Different Daily Plans

For a longer day of walking, there are two circular trails with different profiles to choose from. The PR8 VBP Trilho dos Dinossauros is 10 km long, takes 3 hours and 10 minutes and has a moderate difficulty level. The PR7 VBP Trilho dos Romanos e dos Piratas covers 14 km, is listed as taking 5 hours and is classified as easy. Taking the trail length and the stated duration into account when planning allows you to choose the walk to suit the day's other interests.

Wetlands, Beaches and Natural Attractions

The approximately 134-hectare Paul da Lontreira, also known as Paul de Budens, is located in the area around Budens. The wetland is named after the otters found there. It formed at Praia da Boca do Rio, where the three watercourses Ribeira de Vale Barão, Ribeira de Vale de Boi and Ribeira de Budens meet the sea. The Estação da Biodiversidade da Boca do Rio also begins there, an approximately 2 km-long circular walking trail. Information panels provide field-guide-style orientation to some of the animals and plants found there.

The cultural history of the surrounding area includes the Ruínas do Forte de São Luís de Almádena. The fortification was built in 1632 to protect the tuna fishery at the adjacent beach, Praia da Boca do Rio. At Praia da Salema, a clearly visible trail of dinosaur footprints can be seen at the western end, on a slab at the foot of the staircase leading to the beach. Praia das Furnas is named after the coastal caves in its limestone cliffs and lies entirely within the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina.
