Roman History and Local Places of Remembrance

The Vila Romana da Quinta de Marim is a Roman archaeological site in the freguesia of Quelfes near the Algarve coast. Its complex included a residential building, a bathhouse, warehouses, a temple, a mausoleum and several necropolises. The archaeological remains indicate use from the 2nd century until the end of the 4th or the beginning of the 5th century. For visitors interested in antiquity, this provides a concrete impression of how extensive the complex once was.

The Igreja Matriz de Quelfes also tells the story of different eras. The main portal and the chancel arch are designed in the Renaissance style, while a Gothic side door points to medieval origins. The interior is spacious and has three naves. A later chapter in the local history is associated with the Chalé de Marim: the poet João Lúcio commissioned the building in 1916; after his death in 1918, work was interrupted. Today, the Chalé Dr. João Lúcio houses the Ecoteca Museum, which is part of the National Network of Ecotecas and serves environmental education.

The Torres de Marim and Quatrim were built between the 12th and 16th centuries in connection with the coast and the Ria Formosa. They served to monitor and protect the land and the coastal population. At the Ponte Velha de Quelfes, a historical event also commemorates the conflicts of 1808: a battle took place in its vicinity on 18 June between residents of Olhão and Moncarapacho and French troops.

The Circuito de Manutenção de Pinheiros de Marim comprises three routes; the longest is 3 km long. Exercise equipment for outdoor physical training is placed along the routes. This offers a clear option for a short active segment of the day, while the natural and cultural destinations appeal to other interests.
