Discover Vaqueiros: Trails, Landscapes and Village Culture

Vaqueiros combines unspoilt landscapes, historical traces and several hiking experiences. Those planning a trip with different interests can choose between longer long-distance hiking sections, shorter routes, an audio-guided trail and insights into the village’s history. Historical traces in Vaqueiros

An important part of the village’s history is the former Núcleo Museológico de Vaqueiros. It opened in June 2001 in the old primary school of Vaqueiros with the exhibition “Vidas no Campo”. For your trip planning, however, you should bear in mind that the Núcleo Museológico was closed to the public in April 2004 and subsequently dismantled. The museum’s history is therefore part of the village’s past and should not be planned as a current museum offering.

The Igreja de São Pedro, Vaqueiros’ parish church, also contributes to the village’s historical character. It probably dates from the 16th century and was remodelled in the 18th century. Those interested in religious buildings and organically developed village landscapes can take this aspect into account when exploring Vaqueiros. Hiking trails for different travel plans

The routes around Vaqueiros differ in length, form and character. PR8 – “Em busca do Vale Encantado” is a hiking trail of around 13 km in the “short route” category.

Those wishing to include a longer connection in their trip can take Route 8 of the Via Algarviana from Vaqueiros to Martim Longo, an 18.7 km stretch. It passes through the Ribeira da Foupana, whose lush vegetation is one of the highlights of this trail. The Via Algarviana, also known as GR13, is a 300 km long-distance hiking route in total that passes through Vaqueiros. Another hiking trail in the “short route” category runs alongside the Vaqueiros reservoir.

A different perspective is offered by the audio-guided trail “Entre Montes e Moinhos”, located in the Vaqueiros parish. Together with PR9 ACT, it provides a selection for travellers who are not looking for just one route, but want to combine landscapes, local history and different ways of getting around.

Landscapes and local impressions

Along PR9 ACT, cork oak and holm oak montado, enclosures lined with olive trees, pine plantations, wheat fields and vegetable gardens shape the landscape. Wild boar, foxes, Egyptian mongooses, rabbits, hares and genets may be encountered along this route. These features make the trail particularly interesting for travellers who want to experience not only the route itself, but also the vegetation, agriculture and potential wildlife sightings during a hike.

For a quieter activity, you can include the Parque de Merendas Fonte da Parra picnic park in your plans. It is located next to the Vaqueiros reservoir. This means that, alongside the longer hiking routes, there is also a place where trip planning can focus on experiencing the landscape with less emphasis on covering distance.

Regional products and traditional crafts

The local character also includes the Feira do Pão Quente e do Queijo Fresco. It brings together producers of these and other agricultural products, craftspeople and masters of traditional crafts. Choose this place as a destination if this combination suits your ideas better than a stay focused exclusively on a single activity.
