Vila Flor lies at the upper end of the Tua Valley, offering views across the valley. The town combines expansive landscapes with historic buildings, hiking trails, local festivals and a strong agricultural tradition. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Vila Flor can therefore plan their trip around different interests: landscapes and outdoor activities, culture or a particular date in the course of the year.

Experience the landscape and discover the trails

One notable viewpoint is the Miradouro da Senhora da Lapa. It is located at an altitude of 700 metres and offers sweeping views over Vila Flor. The complex includes a bandstand and several chapels. The Senhora da Lapa Chapel was built in 1760. This makes the site a meeting point of panoramic views and sacred architecture – two different focal points for a day’s itinerary.

Vila Flor also has a network of hiking trails. The routes cross villages, pass through mountain ranges, descend into valleys and run along the Rio Tua. Another destination offering a variety of ideas for a day out is the O Peneireiro green area, with a municipal swimming pool, picnic areas, an aerobic fitness trail and a reservoir.

History and culture in Vila Flor

The Arco de Dom Dinis is the only surviving gate of Vila Flor’s former defensive wall. The surviving Arco de D. Dinis also retains an attached structure that was probably part of the former castle fortifications. In addition to protecting the settlement, Vila Flor Castle was intended to protect a section of the Way of St. James that passed through the Bragança region.

The museums and religious buildings also give the town its own cultural identity. The Museu Berta Cabral was founded in 1957 by Raúl de Sá Correia in the former Solar dos Aguilares. The Museu Municipal Dra Berta Cabral houses around 3,000 items. The Igreja Matriz in Vila Flor was rebuilt in the Baroque style during the 17th and 18th centuries. For those interested in culture, this creates a choice of experiences ranging from the history of fortifications and collections to Baroque church architecture.

Blossom season, markets and festivals

At the end of winter, almond trees turn the landscape around Vila Flor white and pink. This coincides with AMENDOEIRAS EM FLOR, which normally takes place on the last weekend of February and the first weekends of March. Those wishing to plan their travel around the landscape and local events will find a particularly distinctive seasonal connection here.

Vila Flor’s monthly Feiras take place on the 15th and 28th of each month at the town’s fair and exhibition park. On 23 August, the religious São Bartolomeu celebrations coincide with Terra Flor, the agricultural products fair. In the wider regional area around Vila Flor, the region’s most important pilgrimage takes place at the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Assunção; its highlight is the procession on 15 August.

December also has its own focus of events: VILA F'LIZ NATAL takes place every December in Praça da República in Vila Flor and includes a fair designed especially for children that also entertains the whole family. For a trip with children, this date can therefore offer a different focus from a hiking or cultural holiday outside the festival periods.

The right accommodation for your travel plans

When looking for a holiday apartment in Vila Flor, it is worth deciding first what kind of pace you want for your trip. If the trip is primarily intended to include landscapes, trails and the Rio Tua, outdoor activities will be the main focus. If history, museums, churches or specific events are more important, the timing of the trip may matter more than creating the most varied daily itinerary possible. Olive oil, an important agricultural product of Vila Flor, further reflects the character of a place whose landscape and culture are closely connected with its regional identity.
