Linhares: Hiking, the Douro and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Linhares
From the summit of Monte do Castelo, panoramic views stretch across the Douro and Linhares. Hiking trails, connections with the landscape and historic buildings give your stay different points of focus. You can shape your trip around activity, nature and local history, depending on which experiences matter most to you.
Hiking and the Douro Landscape
The Trilho de Linhares is a short PR circular hiking trail in the municipal hiking network of Carrazeda de Ansiães. It begins beside the Capela de Nª Srª de Fátima, near the parish church. A 13.2 km circular route through Linhares passes the Quedas d'Alto waterfall, the Miradouro dos Moinhos and the Solar dos Sampaios. This means there is different information to consider when planning your walks: the Trilho is classified as a short PR circular trail, while the other loop has a specific distance and several named stops.
The routes in Linhares overlap, making it possible to plan a hike that connects two places. The municipal project provides for information boards at the start and end of each trail; these are intended to describe the route in detail. Confirm the start of the Trilho de Linhares on site and check the current route, as trail conditions can change.
Fraga das Ferraduras is a granite batholith—a large body of granite—beside a footpath that connected Linhares with the right bank of the Douro. A substantial stretch of the Douro landscape, which is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, lies near Fraga. A medieval paved path in Linhares also leads to the banks of the Douro. The summit of Monte do Castelo offers another vantage point over the landscape: from there, panoramic views stretch across the Douro and the village.
Churches, the Castle and Local History
The parish church of Linhares is an 18th-century building that replaced an older church on this site. Gilded wooden altarpieces—that is, altar structures—stand in the nave and on either side of the triumphal arch. The Igreja Paroquial de S. Miguel de Linhares has an 18th-century coffered ceiling and is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest). Its construction date, features and protected status offer several distinct historical and architectural points of interest.
The settlement history of Castelo de Linhares spans the Copper Age, Bronze Age, Roman and medieval periods. The site remained active until the late Middle Ages. Another landmark in the area’s history is the charter that Linhares received from King Fernando the Great in the 11th century.
The Pelourinho de Linhares also combines a specific structure with a changing history: it was probably built in the 17th century and moved from its original location to its present site in the 1940s. Three steps, a smooth round shaft and a finial shaped like a Florão—a floral ornament—form the structure.
The former wine press, Escorregadeira, adds wine production as another aspect of local history. It complements the themes of the church, castle and historic routes with a different perspective on the area’s heritage.
Choose a Holiday Rental to Suit Your Trip
If you want to combine hiking with local history, Linhares could be a natural place to look for a holiday rental. Make your choice based on whether your trip will focus more on circular routes and the Douro landscape or on the church, Castelo and Pelourinho. This way, your search reflects the experiences you want to plan, without limiting your stay to just one theme.
