The PR10 VRM – Os Carvalhos do Ermal circular hiking trail is 11 kilometres long, runs through Guilhofrei at the foot of the Serra do Merouço and takes about three hours. The trail passes chapels, wayside shrines and the parish church. It also includes a centuries-old oak, rural paths, historic houses, remains of a medieval cobbled road, streams and several fountains. The route thus combines landscape and local history in a single hike.

One of the notable stops is the oak known by the local community as Carvalha Grossa. It is dated to the 16th century and stands in the village of Ermal. Those who enjoy discovering tangible traces of history along the way will therefore find more than just natural scenery on the PR10. To reach the starting point, travel from Vieira do Minho via the EN 304, the EM 599 and the EM 1406. Then follow the signs to Guilhofrei and drive approximately one kilometre beyond the dam to Praia Fluvial do Carvalho.

Landscape and Special Viewpoints

The area around Lage Branca shows Guilhofrei from a more rugged side. There is a rocky escarpment with distinctive rock outcrops near the 900-metre contour line. This area offers views of the Albufeira do Ermal and the Serra do Gerês. Another historical reference point is the Mamoa de Penedo das Penas on Monte de Guilhofrei: The approximately 7.5-metre-wide structure has a stone encircling ring, is less than one metre high and has already been heavily altered.

Churches, Manor Houses and Local History

Culture in Guilhofrei can also be discovered through specific buildings. Inside the Igreja de Santiago de Guilhofrei are a gilded high altar reredos, a statue of Saint James and a ceiling painting depicting Santiago Mata-Mouros. The parish church of Guilhofrei is located in Assento and is dedicated to Saint James. The altar in the main chapel is Baroque and is considered the richest part of the church.

The Capela de S. Silvestre has a rectangular floor plan oriented east–west, granite masonry and a gabled roof. The Casa do Visconde de Guilhofrei dates from the first half of the 19th century and features architecture of Brazilian origin. The local history also includes the Casa da Cadeia, which formerly housed the prison of the Couto de Guilhofrei and is now a residential building, as well as the Casa do Foral, where the administration of justice for the former municipality of Guilhofrei was managed. The Casa da Muda in Louredo is associated with the historic changing of horses to continue the journey.
