In Terras De Bouro, the history of a Roman road and rural mountain heritage meet oak forests, waterfalls and reservoirs. The destinations tell very different stories: the Geira is about Roman milestones, the villages about granite and traditional ways of life, and the waters about nature and water sports. You can plan your trip around whether you mainly want to discover culture, spend time outdoors or enjoy time by the water.

Roman Traces and Religious Heritage

A section of the Via XVIII, also known as the Geira, runs through Terras De Bouro between Roman milestones XIV and XXXIV and is classified as a National Monument. The Portuguese section of the Geira, which crosses Peneda-Gerês National Park, is associated with 140 catalogued milestones, 102 of which remain in situ. The Geira Museum complements this historical focus with four themed rooms, an auditorium and spaces for archaeological studies.

São Bento da Porta Aberta also shows how a place's history has developed over a long period: devotion began with the construction of a small chapel in 1614. The sanctuary was granted basilica status in April 2015. Castro de Calcedónia offers another historical perspective, as evidence of the area's continuous human settlement from prehistory to the present day.

Mountain Villages and Living Traditions

In Brufe, granite buildings, granaries, threshing floors, drying houses and watermills shape the rural mountain heritage. Aldeia de Cutelo also preserves granite houses and traditional structures, including granaries, threshing floors, drying houses, watermills and the São Domingos Chapel. These details make the villages destinations in their own right for anyone who wants to discover traditional building and working practices as well as the landscape.

In Aldeia da Ermida, traditions connected with the agricultural and livestock calendar have been preserved. The ATACE association promotes the tradition of the Vezeira there. At the Centro de Artes Tradicionais in Seixo, also known as Pedras Brancas, items made on traditional looms, linen work, and basketry and woodwork are produced and sold; opening hours and sales arrangements may change.

Forests, Heights and Waterfalls

Serra Amarela rises to 1,361 metres and is the ninth-highest peak on mainland Portugal. Mata de Albergaria offers a different landscape: the forest is one of the most representative Galician-Portuguese oak forests in Peneda-Gerês National Park and is part of the Matas de Palheiros e Albergaria Biogenetic Reserve.

Cascata do Arado lies at an altitude of about 900 metres and forms a series of cascades among the rocks. It is accessible by car; the last kilometre follows an unpaved road to the bridge over the River Arado. From there, stone steps lead to a small viewpoint. Check road and path conditions before setting out. If you prefer a short walk with a historical connection, you can reach Ponte de São Miguel along a one-kilometre stretch of the Geira from the border at Portela do Homem. Roman masonry is still preserved at the beginning of the bridge; here too, you should check path conditions in advance.

Compare Reservoirs and Excursion Styles

The reservoirs offer different options for days by the water. Albufeira da Caniçada has a navigable area of 689 hectares. Companies offer water-based activities at Praia Fluvial do Alqueirão; operators and services may change. The beach is on the reservoir shore, beyond the bridge between Rio Caldo and Vila do Gerês. Fishing and swimming are permitted as leisure activities at the Vilarinho das Furnas Reservoir. Its flooded area covers 346 hectares; check the reservoir's current rules before taking part.

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: the Geira and village culture, forests and heights, or water activities. Then compare the location of the accommodation with the destinations you actually want to visit. This way, you can choose your base to suit the holiday you have planned, rather than letting a single day trip determine your entire stay.
