Parada Do Bouro brings together a riverside landscape, buildings and historical traces from different centuries. The village lies on the left bank of the Cávado; the Ponte do Boco, religious buildings and the heritage of the Terra de Penafiel de Soás offer different perspectives on its history. The view of the reservoir and Gerês from Monte de S. Mamede adds a distinctive landscape feature.

The Ponte do Boco on the Cávado

The Ponte do Boco crosses the Cávado and is located in the village of Aldeia, in the parish of Parada de Bouro. Built in 1908, it was the first reinforced-concrete bridge constructed in the Braga District. It spans 33 metres and has a single lane. Its date, material and dimensions make it a tangible example of regional construction history: it is not only a river crossing, but also an early use of reinforced concrete in the Braga District.

Near the bridge, the Cávado Valley offers clear water and lush vegetation. Monte de S. Mamede presents a different landscape: it rises to 743 metres and offers panoramic views of the reservoir and Gerês. The Castro do Monte de Penafiel de Soas, also called Monte de S. Mamede, is divided between the municipalities of Póvoa de Lanhoso and Vieira do Minho. The riverside landscape and the panoramic views from the heights offer different points of interest to consider when deciding which aspects of the area interest you most.

Traces of local history

Parada de Bouro is mentioned in documents dating from 1059. Castelo de São Mamede was the centre of the Terra de Penafiel de Soás. The historical context also includes a charter and a Couto, which D. Sancho I gave to his mistress, D. Maria Pais Ribeiro, also known as Ribeirinha, and their children. These names and terms provide specific points of reference for the village’s history, extending beyond individual buildings.

The Pelourinho of Parada de Bouro is classified as an “imóvel de interesse público” (property of public interest, IIP). It was converted into a crucifix and stands beside the parish church; it may date from the 17th century. The parish church of São Julião also connects different periods: it was built in 1789 and rebuilt in 1983, with its original design substantially altered. Beside its bell tower, a fig tree continues to bear fruit despite several attempts to remove it—an unusual detail among the historic buildings.

Other chapels add to the picture. The Chapel of São Sebastião in Pandoses dates from 1696. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres in the village of Cabo de Além was built in 1732; a niche above its main entrance holds a granite image of Nossa Senhora. These religious buildings combine clearly documented dates of construction with distinctive architectural details.

Casa de Senrela and Casa do Vale are also part of the architectural heritage. Casa de Senrela is an 18th-century building with a chapel dedicated to Senhora dos Remédios and a coat-of-arms gateway. Queen D. Maria I granted the coat of arms to Captain Manuel da Silva Sousa Barbosa on 27 April 1777. Casa do Vale has a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne and also features a coat-of-arms gateway; its coat of arms was granted on 20 October 1756 to Capitão-Mor da Ribeira Soaz António José de Araújo Vale. Both examples combine chapels and coat-of-arms gateways with their own historical dates and names.

Local character and choosing a holiday rental

The oranges of Parada are also associated with fruit growing in Parada de Bouro. Together with the Cávado and the historic buildings, they contribute to a local character shaped by landscape, architecture and local produce. When looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: the riverside landscape near the Ponte do Boco, the panoramic views from Monte de S. Mamede, or the history of the churches, chapels and houses. These different themes can help you decide what interests you about Parada Do Bouro and choose your holiday destination accordingly.
