Fafe: Nature, Culture and Varied Holiday Days

Fafe combines different travel ideas: you can combine days of cycling and hiking with waterscapes, regional history and unusual museums. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, the key consideration is therefore which experiences you want to shape your trip. Fafe offers both active routes and cultural themes, as well as distinctive urban architecture.

Cycling and hiking between several landscape experiences

One specific option for a cycling holiday is the shared Pista de Cicloturismo. It is 15.4 kilometres long in total. Of this, 8.3 kilometres run through the municipality of Fafe and 7.1 kilometres through the municipality of Guimarães. Along this route, cyclists have priority over the roads crossing it. If you are planning a cycling trip, you can incorporate its length into your daily schedule without committing to a specific itinerary.

The municipality of Fafe also offers hikers a wide choice: there are more than a dozen signposted PR hiking trails with several levels of difficulty. This opens up various possibilities for planning your holiday, from a shorter outing to a more challenging tour. A special alternative is the Grande Rota do Património e do Ambiente das Terras Altas de Fafe. This 50-kilometre circular long-distance hiking trail belongs to the Grande Rota (GR) category and leads in three stages from Várzea Cova to Mós, from Mós to Pontido and from Pontido back to Várzea Cova.

Waterscapes and more relaxed excursions

The Albufeira da Queimadela is an 11-hectare reservoir supplied by the Vizela River. Its surroundings include a river beach and picnic areas. There are also opportunities for environmentally friendly water sports. This allows you to spend a day of your trip differently from a longer hike or cycling tour.

Museums, rallies and the history of Fafe

The Estação Memória is an interpretive museum about the history, traditions and nature of Fafe. The Museu do Rali focuses on a different subject. Its exhibition displays 25 rally cars; racing suits, helmets, miniatures, specialist motorsport magazines, as well as posters and notices relating to drivers and brands are also part of the museum's theme. This gives visitors interested in technology, motorsport or regional identity a distinctly different cultural perspective from that of a traditional city walk.

The fully restored Teatro Cinema de Fafe is an architectural attraction and a cultural landmark of the city dating from 1923. Fafe's urban character also includes palace-like houses in the Brazilian style, built by returning emigrants. These buildings point to a visible part of the city's history and add an architectural perspective to the trip alongside the landscape and activities.

The Museu da Imprensa de Fafe preserves equipment used to produce, print and finish the former local newspapers “O Desforço”, founded in 1892, and “Almanaque Ilustrado de Fafe”, founded in 1909. The collection also includes a printing press dating from 1885. Other machines illustrate the development of typographic work from manual to mechanical typesetting. The Museu das Migrações e das Comunidades explores Portuguese emigration to Brazil in the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, as well as emigration to European countries in the second half of the 20th century.

Planning Fafe as a base

The A7 connects Fafe with Braga, which is 42 kilometres or approximately 34 minutes away, and with Porto, which is 68 kilometres or approximately 52 minutes away. This information helps you get a general idea of your journey and consider whether to choose Fafe as a destination in its own right or as part of a broader travel plan. The right accommodation depends on your preferred pace: cultural interests, hikes, cycling routes and water-based activities can each set different priorities.

Other places to consider for your trip

If you would like to compare other destinations in addition to Fafe, you can also include Celorico De Basto, Gemeses, Sobradelo Da Goma, Vila Nova De Famalicão, Anjos, Ribeirão, Campo do Gerês and Revelhe in your search.
