Cossourado: Hiking Trails, Nature and Cultural Traditions

Cossourado combines paths along the Neiva River with a landscape where culture, traditions and historic sites create their own distinctive character. Those looking for a mix of activity and discovery during their holiday will find several starting points here for planning their trip: a nine-kilometre riverside trail, natural areas along the river, Quinta de Agrelo and cultural features such as Pão das Almas. Hiking along the Neiva River

The municipal hiking trail “Trilho das Pontes do Neiva” runs for nine kilometres along the banks of the Neiva River between Cossourado and Tregosa. The exact route length is therefore a concrete factor in planning your day.

Another landscape designation is Veiga do Rio de Balugães para Cossourado. It is one of the natural areas highlighted by the municipality along the Neiva River. Quinta de Agrelo and cultural discoveries

The Ponte da Caridade in Cossourado is one of the places the municipality recommends visiting. Another prominent point of reference is Quinta de Agrelo. It lies on the route of the Caminhos de Santiago and has a group of traditionally designed buildings closely connected to the landscape. The wines of Vinha do 9 are also produced at Quinta de Agrelo. The Quinta has been owned by the Rosas family for more than 300 years.

Cossourado therefore offers not only experiences in nature, but also points of interest for visitors interested in regional history, architecture and wine. Pão das Almas de Cossourado was nominated in the “Rituals and Customs” category for the 7 Maravilhas da Cultura Popular. More recent cultural initiatives are also part of the character of the place. The initiative for the Ecomuseu do Neiva included colloquia, interviews and workshops from July to December 2022. Its content was explained at a public meeting on 30 September. The aim was to preserve and enhance the region’s cultural and landscape heritage. After a two-year interruption related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Festa das Cruzes was also revived. The Junta de Freguesia commissioned the Agrupamento dos Escuteiros 1203 de S. Tiago to make a traditional pilgrimage arch for the exhibition of the various Freguesias.
