Cuba in Portugal’s Alentejo is a place in its own right, with a literature museum, old streets and a regional music tradition. When looking for a holiday rental, the name’s similarity to the Caribbean country should not lead to confusion about its location.

Literature and Local History

  • Casa Fialho de Almeida is a literature museum in the centre of Cuba, dedicated to the life and work of Fialho de Almeida.
  • The buildings adjoining the Casa Fialho de Almeida museum focus on rural life and ethnography, themes that recur in Fialho de Almeida’s writings.
  • Rua da Mouraria and Rua do Carmo are described as the oldest part of the town of Cuba.
  • Igreja de S. Pedro stands on a raised point in the town of Cuba, offering a beautiful view across the plain, and is a pilgrimage chapel.
  • Igreja Matriz de Cuba is said to have been built in the 16th century; work continued into the 18th century, which explains its Mannerist and Baroque character.

Culture and Routes

  • The choral group Os Ceifeiros de Cuba was founded by António Luís Fialho in 1933 and gave its first public performance at the Feira de Cuba that same year.
  • The Rota do Fresco is a cultural tourism initiative featuring visits to selected frescoes on the walls of chapels, hermitages and churches in five municipalities—Alvito, Cuba, Portel, Vidigueira and Viana do Alentejo.
  • The Rota das Tabernas in Cuba leads through old, traditional taverns serving regional snacks and “copos de três”.
  • Cuba presents itself as a historic town among olive groves, with a tradition of winegrowing.

Choose the Right Accommodation

A holiday rental in the centre may suit visits to the museum and old town differently from accommodation outside the centre. What matters is the actual address, the opening hours of the places you plan to visit and the details of the individual property. The Rota do Fresco covers five municipalities; it is not a single attraction in the centre of Cuba.
