Velas combines impressive viewpoints, a multifaceted cultural history and special experiences along the coast. Those planning a trip with varied interests will find opportunities here to enjoy landscapes, museums, historic buildings and water activities. This mix helps you choose the right accommodation based on your preferred focus: for example, for days featuring scenic views and culture, or for a stay that includes diving and snorkelling.

Viewpoints and Protected Landscapes

A prominent place for appreciating the landscape is the Canavial Viewpoint. It is an outstanding geosite within the Azores Geopark, with national importance as well as scientific, educational and geotourism interest. The focus here is therefore not only on the view, but also on the site's special geological and landscape significance.

The Velas Viewpoint offers panoramic views over the town of Velas as well as Pico and Faial. At the same time, it is located within the Costa das Velas protected area for the management of habitats or species. This creates an interesting combination of views over the town, an island panorama and a protected landscape area for your travel planning. If you enjoy consciously choosing different destinations for each day, you can balance viewpoints and cultural visits at your own pace.

Museums and Historical Heritage

The Velas Sacred Art Museum displays a large collection of religious statues. The Casa Museu Cunha da Silveira is permanently dedicated to the long-term exhibition “O Mar e a Terra - Sustentabilidade de um Povo”. The two institutions have different focuses: religious art takes centre stage in one, while the other focuses on the relationship between the sea, the land and the sustainability of a people.

The Fortaleza da Nossa Senhora da Conceição is also part of Velas's cultural profile. It was revitalised by the Município de Velas as a cultural centre and municipal auditorium. Its construction work probably did not begin until 1644. The Misericórdia Hospital in Velas, completed in 1708, and the church of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, which has preserved its historic architecture, also contribute to the town's historical context.

Another piece of historical heritage is the Forte da Ponta das Eiras ou Castelinho. It was built after the privateer Du Guay Trouin attacked Velas. The fort includes a tourist viewpoint that reuses the floor plan of the original fort. During a cultural stay, you can therefore discover different forms of historical remembrance, from religious buildings to fortifications.

Water Experiences off the Coast

Those who want to combine their stay in Velas with activities in the water will find a documented dive site off the coast at Gruta dos Corais. The site is less than 100 metres offshore, opposite Vila das Velas, and is suitable for dives, night dives and snorkelling. This offers a different travel perspective from a day at a museum or viewpoint. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether cultural discoveries or coastal experiences should be the focus of your trip.

Travel and Cultural Context

Linda Verde, operated by Atlânticoline, is relevant for connections between the islands. It connects Faial with Horta, Pico with São Roque and Madalena, and São Jorge with Velas. The first Semana Cultural das Velas was organised in 1988. This historical reference forms part of the town's cultural development without anticipating any current event planning.

The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans

Velas is a suitable destination for travellers who do not want to consider just one activity when choosing their accommodation. A holiday apartment or holiday home can serve as the starting point for a trip that combines viewpoints, museums, historic sites and water experiences in different ways. What matters is your own focus: those primarily interested in landscapes will pay particular attention to the Canavial Viewpoint and the Velas Viewpoint. Those wishing to explore the culture in greater depth will find several distinct themes in the museums, the Fortaleza, the hospital and the religious buildings. For water activities, Gruta dos Corais provides a clearly identifiable point of reference.

You can find other places for your travel planning under Manadas, Barreiras, Queimada and Calheta.
