The Nollebos complements this coastal perspective: it is a diverse 26-hectare nature and recreation area on the edge of the beach, dunes and promenade in Vlissingen. This makes it possible to combine days by the sea with walks through the landscape. The Bevrijdingspad Vlissingen trail can be started at any point. The “Wandeling langs de hoogtepunten van Vlissingen” route is a 4.5-kilometre city walk with sea views.

Maritime history and special places

At the MuZEEum in Vlissingen, interactive exhibitions provide insights into Zeeland’s maritime history and future. The Dok van Perry is the oldest dry dock in the Netherlands and one of the oldest in Western Europe. The museum ship Mercuur is a former seagoing minesweeper that later served as a torpedo workshop ship for the Royal Netherlands Navy. The Scheldekwartier is a water-surrounded area in Vlissingen with a maritime history and future; it is centrally located and close to the city’s facilities.

Uncle Beach tells the story of Vlissingen’s occupation, liberation and civilian population during the Second World War. At the Bunkermuseum Vlissingen, visitors can see a Type 143 artillery observation bunker that has been almost completely restored to its original condition. The bunker has a 20-tonne armoured cupola with a periscope, from which the Western Scheldt was monitored. The Gevangentoren is the seaside tower of Vlissingen’s former West Gate, which was built around 1401; in 1610, it was given its new function as the city prison.

The historic cityscape also includes the old town centre, which is designated as a protected townscape and contains around 300 listed monuments, as well as the Kazematten, the remains of Vlissingen’s old fortifications. The Windorgel is a wind-played work of art that produces changing sounds depending on wind strength and direction. The Sint Jacobskerk stands on the Oude Markt. The Oranjemolen is the only surviving one of Vlissingen’s 23 city mills; the Oranjemolen from 1699 is a corn mill and former oat mill on the Oranjedijk in Vlissingen.

The 28th edition of Film by the Sea will take place from 11 September to 20 September 2026 in Vlissingen and various other cities in Zeeland. Film adaptations of books are at the heart of the festival. Guided tours at the Bunkermuseum Vlissingen can generally be booked throughout the year; it is open on the last Saturday of every month from 13:00 to 17:00. Visits to the Oranjemolen are possible on Fridays from 09:00 to 16:00 and by appointment.
