Utrecht offers several ways to explore its history: the medieval system of the Oudegracht and its wharves, the Dom Tower, mechanical music and architecture from the De Stijl movement. The Oudegracht and its wharves form a system developed in the Middle Ages that is considered unique worldwide. The Dom Tower is 112 metres and 32 centimetres tall, making it the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. Walking and cycling routes, as well as stand-up paddleboarding, also offer different ways to experience the city.

Guided History and the Dom Tower

The guided underground discovery tour DOMunder takes visitors beneath Domplein and past the remains of a Roman fortress and medieval buildings. Using a torch, visitors explore 2,000 years of Domplein history and archaeological treasures. The Dom Tower offers a different experience: on guided tours, an experienced guide leads visitors up the tower and explains its history and restoration. The experiences differ in format, too: an underground discovery with a torch or a guided climb. Check the latest dates for DOMunder and tower tours in advance, as tour arrangements may change.

Musical Machines and Museums

At Museum Speelklok, mechanical instruments are demonstrated during an interactive Musical Tour, which explains the stories and techniques behind the centuries-old musical machines. The museum expedition also includes a Royal Room with music boxes and musical clocks. Visitors can therefore choose between a tour with explanations of the technology and history, and a room dedicated to specific instruments.

Museum Speelklok is a ten-minute walk from Utrecht Centraal station. Alternatively, visitors can take city bus 2 towards Museumkwartier and get off at the Domplein stop. Check the timetable before your visit, as public transport arrangements may change.

From De Stijl to the Centraal Museum Collection

The Rietveld Schröder House is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a highlight of the De Stijl movement. Utrecht architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld designed it in 1924 for the widow Truus Schröder. The Centraal Museum offers another perspective on Rietveld’s work: established in 1838, it is the oldest municipal museum in the Netherlands. Its collection includes art, Utrecht’s city history, fashion and applied arts; the museum also owns the world’s largest collection of Rietveld objects. A single architectural work and a collection spanning several subject areas offer different options for cultural interests.

City Routes, the Surrounding Area and Water

Utrecht can be explored on walking and cycling routes through the historic city centre and the green surrounding area. Visitors can go stand-up paddleboarding on the Singels; availability depends on providers and conditions. If you are planning this activity, check the specific offer and conditions in advance.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Utrecht, use the mix of activities you have planned as your guide: are museums and architecture your priority, or would you like to include walking and cycling routes through the city centre and surrounding area? These different priorities can help guide your search for a location. Then compare the location you want with the visits and routes you actually plan to take.
