Slot Zuylen and its gardens

Slot Zuylen originated around 1250, when Steven van Zuylen laid the first stone for his square residential tower, with walls more than 2.5 metres thick. The collection at Slot Zuylen includes objects from the 16th through the 20th century. Here, an early construction date meets a collection spanning several centuries.

The oldest known design of the garden at Slot Zuylen is considered to be the layout depicted in a drawing from 1624. It included tree-lined avenues, an orchard and a kitchen garden. The south-facing serpentine or espalier wall can create a microclimate in its curves that retains heat for longer and allows exotic fruit such as figs to grow.

Cultural monuments and windmills

The historic village setting includes the Dutch Reformed Church in Oud Zuilen. It dates from 1847 and has a single-manual organ built by G. van Druten in 1894. The church at Dorpsstraat 10 is one of the Rijksmonumenten, the Netherlands’ national heritage sites, and is regarded as a chapel with a small bell tower and heraldic cartouches. The walled family cemetery and the entrance complex in Oud Zuilen have been Rijksmonumenten since 1990.

Oud Zuilen Cemetery is considered the oldest cemetery still in active use outside a built-up area. With a wingspan of 28 metres, the Molen van de Polder Westbroek is the largest windmill in the province of Utrecht and dates from 1753; today it serves as an auxiliary pumping station. The Molen van de Polder Buitenweg was built as a hollow post windmill in 1830 and, with a wingspan of 18 metres, is the smallest windmill in the province of Utrecht.
