Holiday apartment in Nieuwersluis – Fort, locks and park landscapes along the Vecht
Accommodation in Nieuwersluis
Nieuwersluis is a place for anyone who wants to experience historic waterworks, park landscapes and country estates along the Vecht together. Nieuwersluis is designated as a protected town and village landscape, bringing distinctive individual features together to create a particularly history-rich townscape. A holiday apartment in Nieuwersluis is an appealing choice if you would like to include culture, nature appreciation, and days of cycling and walking in your travel plans.
Fort Nieuwersluis and the Water Line
The round brick tower fort of Fort Nieuwersluis was expanded in 1880 with a large brick barracks building and four carriage houses with basement rooms. In connection with the fort, the engineering corps built the Damsluis in 1871 as part of the New Dutch Water Line. Because of its cultural and architectural-historical value, the Damsluis is considered a well-preserved example of a Damsluis built in 1871 within the New Dutch Water Line and in connection with Fort Nieuwersluis. The years 1871 and 1880 mark two construction phases of the historic Water Line. Nature also has a place here: the tower fort serves as a wintering site for bats, including the rare whiskered bat.
Sterreschans, park landscape and Mennistenhemel
Together with the adjacent country estates of Overholland and Rupelmonde, Sterreschans forms the historic series of country estates along the Vecht in Nieuwersluis known as the “Mennistenhemel”. Their owners were Mennonites. The park surrounding the house and the outer park of Sterreschans form a relatively well-preserved example of an early-19th-century landscape-style park along the Vecht. The outer park is designed as a “ferme ornée” and is one of the few surviving estates of this kind in the Netherlands. Sterreschans’s historic network of paths continues between the park and outer park; the two sections therefore form a compositional and stylistic whole.
Locks and a tea pavilion with an exact year
The first lock in the Nieuwe Wetering near Nieuwersluis was built in 1634. A replacement lock built in 1880 is partially preserved and has not been in use since 1963. Another precise architectural detail can be found in the tea pavilion of VreedenHoff: its exact year of construction, 1776, is recorded on a stone built into the wall.
Across the Vecht by Fietsboot
For cyclists and walkers, the Fietsboot offers a hop-on hop-off boat service across the Vecht between Nieuwersluis and Maarssen. The service has four stops in the old villages of Nieuwersluis, Breukelen and Maarssen, with Maarssen represented twice. The landing stages are located near cycling-route junctions 02, 84, 87 and 46. Their proximity to the cycling-route junctions helps with planning a cycling tour. This allows you to plan the location of your accommodation around your preferred pace of travel: historical discoveries, tranquil park landscapes and active days can each take on different levels of importance. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Nieuwersluis, the key consideration is therefore which of these aspects of the area you would like to combine during your stay.
