Bunnik combines the history of the Hollandse Waterlinies with Roman heritage, river landscapes along the Kromme Rijn and varied routes through meadows, woodland and rural areas. When you choose a holiday apartment in Bunnik, you can spend your days in many different ways: enjoying culture and history, walking along old fortifications, observing nature or discovering the area with the family.
Holiday apartment in Bunnik between the Waterline and Roman times
At the Waterliniemuseum Fort bij Vechten, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites come together: the Hollandse Waterlinies and the Limes, the frontier of the Roman Empire. Castellum Fectio, one of the oldest Roman forts in the Netherlands, was located directly next to Fort bij Vechten. It formed part of the Limes and played an important role in the defence and control of the Rhine, which was an important trade and transport route in Roman times.
The guided tour of Castellum Fectio takes visitors across the site of the former fort and includes a visit to the Roman exhibition at the Waterliniemuseum. The museum also offers an interactive discovery tour through the Waterline. One of the highlights is a virtual-reality flight over the New Dutch Waterline, which was flooded to create a defensive water barrier.
The Oude Dorpskerk also adds a historical accent. It is an early brick building comparable to Utrecht Cathedral. Its tower was built in the 12th century for religious purposes as well as for use as a lookout point and for defence. The ground floor contains loopholes.
Walking between forts, river and fields
The Bunkerpad connects Fort bij Rijnauwen and Fort bij Vechten in Bunnik. The route leads through meadows and along bunkers. Visitors can walk across the grounds of Fort bij Vechten and experience the special connection between the landscape and military history.
The Slagmaatpad is a 7-kilometre Klompenpad through the rural area of Bunnik and Houten. It leads through meadows, past an old fort and through the forest. Families can choose a 7-kilometre KIDS version with educational tasks along the way and its own markings.
Further routes with different focuses run along the Kromme Rijn. The Kromme Rijnpad follows the course of the river and partly runs along an old towpath. Along this route, hikers can discover parts of the Roman Limes and the New Dutch Waterline. The Langs de Kromme Rijn route explores the Kromme Rijn around Bunnik and can start at the car park of Landgoed Niënhof in Bunnik.
Nature and family experiences
Landgoed Niënhof shows the Kromme Rijn in its more natural form. Along the river are old river channels, natural-looking banks and islands. Grass snakes, demoiselle damselflies and kingfishers can be found there. The Ringslangroute Niënhof also runs through Landgoed Niënhof near Bunnik.
For a day out with children, a family treasure hunt is available at the visitor centre of Fort bij Vechten near Bunnik. Together with the KIDS version of the Slagmaatpad, this provides a choice of routes and activities that combine exercise with discoveries in the landscape.
The rural character also includes the Zelfplukboerderij and Landwinkel Nieuw Slagmaat in Bunnik. Seasonal pick-your-own days take place there: in spring for cherries and in autumn for apples, pears and kiwiberries.
