Wassenaar: Discover Dunes, Nature and Culture

From Wassenaar, the dune belt of Hollands Duin stretches to the tip of Zuid-Holland. It is suitable for hiking, cycling and mountain biking.

Wassenaar has a varied landscape with many country estates, villas and farmhouses. In addition to the extensive dune area and the beach, there are also forests and pastureland nearby.

Nature

In Wassenaar, visitors can explore varied natural areas on foot, with rich flora and fauna as well as historic buildings.

Lentevreugd was formerly an area used for growing flower bulbs. It was transformed into wet grassland with ditches and ponds.

Lentevreugd is a transitional area between the dunes and polder, with three ponds. The centrally located pond can temporarily dry up in summer.

The three ponds are therefore part of a natural area that includes both open water surfaces and areas that temporarily dry up.

The Meta Jochemspad runs through the Lentevreugd nature reserve in Hollands Duin. Along the way, visitors may encounter Scottish Highland cattle.

Routes

The Rondje Wassenaar Slag route runs through the dunes and along the sea. It also passes through wet dune valleys and pine forest, and leads past small lakes.

This route therefore connects different types of landscape: the coast, dune valleys, forest and small lakes are all part of its course.

The 9-kilometre hike “Walking through the open coast” through Hollands Duin passes bunkers and an anti-tank wall winding through the landscape.

Panbos is a forest for walking and playing. It has duck ponds, play equipment for children, a deer enclosure and lawns for relaxation.

At De Horsten, you can walk along a large pond. Landscaped islands create changing sightlines and viewpoints.

A valid parking ticket for one day or one year is required in the car park of the Koninklijke Landgoederen De Horsten. The annual ticket is valid for one year from the date of purchase.

Culture

The Poëzieroute in Wassenaar presents 21 poems. The poems are located on façades, in the road surface and in public spaces.

The poems are thus distributed across different parts of Wassenaar and are not confined to a single exhibition space.

The Piet Oudolf garden around Museum Voorlinden contains more than 60 species of perennials and ornamental grasses. It can be viewed from both outside and inside.

Various performances are held at Theater Warenar in Wassenaar. Examples include plays, musicals and cabaret.

Leisure

Duinrell in Wassenaar offers more than 40 attractions in its amusement park. The offerings are suitable for all age groups.

Duinrell’s Tiki Pool has 21 unique slides. Together, they have a total length of 1.5 kilometres.

Museum Voorlinden was opened in Wassenaar by King Willem-Alexander on 10 September 2016.
