Pernis lies between harbors and has preserved the character of a former farming and fishing village. Since the construction of Eemhaven in 1946, the village has been completely surrounded by harbors. The Oud and Nieuw Pernis polders already formed the core area. This combination of harbor surroundings and rural history gives a holiday apartment in Pernis a distinctive setting for varied vacation days.

Holiday Apartment in Pernis: History to Discover

At the Oudheidkamer Pernis, the village’s past comes to life: materials about Pernis and its surroundings are collected and displayed there. The Museumwoning offers a particularly vivid insight. It shows a living room and a small kitchen from the 1930s; most of the furnishings were provided by residents of Pernis. The small kitchen is furnished as it would have been in a dike house between 1930 and 1950.

Concrete landmarks also shape the village’s appearance beyond the Museumwoning. The tower of the Hervormde Kerk in Pernis is a brick structure from the second half of the 15th century; its bell was cast in 1672 by P. Oostens. Buildings were established along the Pastoriedijk in the 15th century; together with the Ring, the Pastoriedijk encloses a circular area. The 18th-century farmstead “Van Geslacht op Geslacht” consists of a house and an adjoining barn beneath a hipped roof covered with tiles. The former fishing harbor, once the pride of the village, was later filled in and is now a parking lot.

Family Time and Garden Experiences

Zwembad Pernis has a 25-meter pool with five lanes for lap swimming. There is also a shallower leisure area and a paddling pool for toddlers. In the Het Groene Woud Pernis nature garden, a barefoot path leads visitors without shoes over various surfaces. In the flower-picking garden, visitors may pick flowers; in the vegetable garden, they may harvest vegetables, accompanied and supported by staff.

Walking, Cycling, and Rotterdam

Anyone wishing to explore Pernis on foot can include the Rotterdams Ommelandpad in their plans: the approximately 150-kilometer hiking trail ends in Pernis. A cycling tour through the Port of Rotterdam can follow the Waalhaven, pass through the Beneluxtunnel, and continue through Pernis. For the journey to Rotterdam, the Pernis P+R parking lot is located at Pernis metro station on the edge of the village. Metro line C toward De Terp takes approximately 18 minutes to reach central Rotterdam from Pernis. The different route lengths make it easier to compare active days and shorter excursions mentally.
