History among museums, churches and mills

The Hazerswoude-Dorp Historical Museum is housed in a listed building dating from 1635, which formerly consisted of two residences and is one of the oldest buildings in the village. The Hazerswoude-Dorp Historical Museum displays Roman finds dating from 100 BC to AD 400, while the permanent exhibition focuses on the development of the many polders around Hazerswoude. The Ned. Herv. Kerk provides another historical highlight: the simple hall church dating from 1646 has a polygonal chancel and a wooden vaulted ceiling. The Rietveldse Molen stands on the western side of Vaardorp Rietveld, at the end of the Rietveldse Vaart.

Walking through polders and Spookverlaat

The Oostvaartroute provides clear guidance for walks and longer hikes. This 8.5-kilometre agricultural landscape trail runs between Hazerswoude-Rijndijk and Hazerswoude-Dorp. The route starts at the Landvliethal, Sportparklaan 15, in Hazerswoude-Dorp. The agricultural landscape paths of the Oostvaartroute are closed outside the period from 15 June to 15 March because of the breeding season. Another walk is called “Wandelen door de polders van Hazerswoude” and leads from the village through the Geerpolder and through Vaardorp Het Rietveld, two polders at different elevations. Along the walking trail in Spookverlaat stand centuries-old pollarded ash trees dating from the time when local farmers still practised coppice management.

Nature observation on cycling and walking routes

The woodland at the end of the Papenpad in the Spookverlaat area is part of an elongated nature reserve covering 25 hectares. The reserve includes the Amalia birdwatching hut. For a longer cycling loop, the 19-kilometre “Op verkenning langs de molens rond Hazerswoude” cycling tour is a good choice. It passes through the polders and includes De Wilck on the Vierheemskinderweg in Hazerswoude-Dorp. De Wilck is rich in meadow birds.

Water activities in Rietveld

De Groene Kathedraal is a garden designed for walking, created on the grounds of a former nursery with a large selection of plants cultivated there. Those arriving at De Groene Kathedraal by boat should continue to the landing stage in the side channel to the right of the sign. Klein Giethoorn rents out electric boats, SUP boards and canoes for exploring Vaardorp Het Rietveld. Theetuin ’t Woutje offers boat tours through the Rietveld.
