Nieuwkoop combines a distinctive waterscape with a rich history of craftsmanship and culture. The Nieuwkoopse Plassen, the Nieuwkoopse Plassen Otter Canoe Route and the Nieuwkoop Hiking Trail provide specific focal points between the lake landscape, waterways, village centre and nature reserve.
Water and nature around Nieuwkoop
The Nieuwkoopse Plassen are a wetland area with large and small lakes, reed beds, meadows and ditches. This landscape provides the setting for various ways of exploring the area. The Nieuwkoopse Plassen Otter Canoe Route can be navigated by electric boat or SUP board and starts at Jachthaven Plaszicht. Starting at Jachthaven Plaszicht gives the water route a specific departure point for planning a day on the water. When choosing between these two options, the route remains the same; only the vehicle used changes.
Rederij Nieuwkoop offers tailor-made arrangements that can combine a boat trip with a museum visit, a walking area or a restaurant. Around the Nieuwkoopse Plassen, the company organises trips on the traditional salon boats Barbarella and Annabel. The Natuurmonumenten excursion boat is adapted for wheelchair users and has space for six wheelchairs.
Culture, craftsmanship and history
Museum Nieuwkoop presents permanent exhibitions on blacksmithing, the polder, the carpenter’s workshop, archaeology and the Oudhollandse Waterlinie. The themes therefore range from traditional craftsmanship to landscape and regional history. ’t Reghthuys also welcomes visitors from outside Nieuwkoop. Hoeve Rijlaarsdam houses a gallery and sculpture garden in a former farmhouse. Those interested in culture can distinguish between the museum’s permanent exhibitions, ’t Reghthuys, which is open to visitors from outside Nieuwkoop, and the gallery with sculpture garden.
Hiking on and alongside the water
The Nieuwkoop Hiking Trail runs through the historic village centre of Nieuwkoop and partly through the Nieuwkoopse Plassen nature reserve. Its route follows the Meijepad, passes through Meijepark and crosses the water via floating paths. Along the way, the historic village centre, park landscape and water-oriented nature come together. The route connects these different landscape sections without limiting its course to the village or the nature reserve.
