Tiengemeten is a hiking island with several walking routes. In 2006, the island was transformed from agricultural land into a nature reserve. It lies directly on the migration route of many different bird species; peace, open space and water attract tens of thousands of birds.

The Tiendgorzen nature reserve is located on the Haringvliet beside the ferry to Tiengemeten. While waiting for the ferry to Tiengemeten, visitors can walk straight into Tiendgorzen. The rare northern vole lives there; reed birds and waders such as reed warblers and redshanks are frequently seen.

The 10-metre-high Tureluur observation tower stands at the Hitsertse Kade. Kayaks and canoes can be temporarily moored at the landing stage there. Hitsertse Kade is a day-recreation area with a designated bathing zone in the Vuile Gat.

The history is also tangible here. The Landzigt grain mill was built in 1857 on the Molendijk in Zuid-Beijerland as a replacement for a wooden post mill. In its own mill, Landzigt grinds the product made entirely from wheat grown and harvested in Zuid-Beijerland Hitserts Volkoren Tarwemeel. The Tiengemeten Agricultural Museum explains the connection between the island's history and daily farming life in the past and present.

There are several different routes for days out by bicycle. The Tiengemeten Route runs through Oud-Beijerland, Nieuw-Beijerland and Zuid-Beijerland; in Zuid-Beijerland, it uses the ferry to Tiengemeten. The De Drie Beijerlanden cycling route runs through Zuid-Beijerland, passing historic farmhouses and distinctive windmills, as well as numerous beautiful dykes, fields and creeks. The Rondje Oud-Beijerland en Tiengemeten route runs along the Zuid-Beijerlandse Bos and past Landzigt. In the Zuid-Beijerlandse Bos, you can walk through the forest and along the banks of the Borrekeen waterway.

For a visit to Tiendgorzen, travelling by car is the best option. From the A29 between Rotterdam and Zierikzee, take the Numansdorp/Zuid-Beijerland exit, then follow the direction of Zuid-Beijerland and the signs for the ferry connection to Tiengemeten. For navigation systems, enter Nieuwendijk 1, 3284 KR Zuid-Beijerland. A ferry runs daily between Nieuwendijk and Tiengemeten. At the Tiengemeten visitor centre, you can get tips on hiking routes and rent bicycles.
