Discover Gorinchem: Fortifications, Rivers and Urban History

Gorinchem combines fortifications, water and urban history. The city is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hollandse Waterlinies; this concerns the area within the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, including its core and buffer zones. Fortifications, historic buildings, the Hendrick Hamel Museum and themed walking routes offer different ways to explore the city.

The Gorinchem–Woudrichem passenger and bicycle ferry operates year-round according to a fixed timetable. Within the city, the Poëzieroute Gorinchem leads through the fortress as a 7.5 km walking route. Along the way are 40 poems and text fragments connected to Gorinchem; QR codes in the accompanying booklet make it possible to listen to the poems on a smartphone or tablet. The 7.5 kilometres provide the route with a clear framework; you can consciously allow time along the way for the poems and QR audio recordings. The route therefore combines steady walking with literary immersion and digital listening.

Tower, Gate and Windmill as Historic Landmarks

The Grote Toren is a late-medieval tower. Its former Catholic St. Maarten's Church was so severely damaged during the siege of 1813/1814 that it was demolished. Today, a 19th-century church building stands there; the tower bears the name Grote Toren. Visitors can climb it and enjoy the view from the fortress's most distinctive building. The Dalempoort is Gorinchem's only remaining city gate, dates from 1597 and has a small tower with a clock.

A footpath runs beneath the Dalempoort to the Merwede. If you follow it, you get good views of the city walls and the Korenmolen De Hoop. De Hoop windmill was built in 1764; the windmill with a gallery stands on the city wall along the Boven-Merwede and is clearly visible from the water. Visitors can enter Molen De Hoop and go up to the gallery, from which they can enjoy views of the Waterlinielandschap 1672.

Museum and Routes Offering Different Perspectives

The Hendrick Hamel Museum tells the story of the 17th-century voyage of seafarer Hendrick Hamel: from his shipwreck and captivity in Korea to his later escape to Japan. A different perspective is offered by the Industrieel erfgoed route Gorinchem. Using the izi.TRAVEL app, it takes visitors through the city's industrial past and covers ports, craftsmen's houses, warehouses and factories. The two offerings focus on different aspects: one on a personal travel story and the other on the city's industrial past.
