Dirksland: Dikes, Nature and History
Accommodation in Dirksland
Dirksland combines flower-rich historic dikes with wet natural areas, waterways and traces of local history. Nature and local history can be experienced at several specific sites: on the dikes of De Spin, in the Zuiderdiepgorzen nature reserve, along the harbour canal and at historic cultural sites.
De Spin: Historic Dikes and Rare Plants
De Spin consists of four interconnected historic dikes: Panksdijkje, Sint Christoffeldijk, Oud-Kraaijerdijk and Onwaardsedijk Noord. Panksdijkje and Sint Christoffeldijk are located in Sommelsdijk, while Oud-Kraaijerdijk and Onwaardsedijk Noord are in Dirksland. You can cycle along the flower-rich historic dikes of De Spin. Those travelling by bicycle experience not only the historic shape of the dikes, but also the transition between the four individual sections and their respective local associations. Rare plants such as agrimony, field eryngo and wild marjoram grow there. When cycling, the dike formations and rare plants are therefore visible together.
Wet Nature and Birdlife
The Zuiderdiepgorzen nature reserve comprises muddy banks, wet grasslands and creeks connected to the Zuiderdiep. Species found in the area include lapwings, avocets, spoonbills and marsh harriers. Nature observation here focuses on both the wet landscape forms and the bird species that occur there. The nature reserve can be experienced from an elevated cycle and walking path.
Walk Along the Harbour Canal
The Dirksland harbour canal is 5.1 kilometres long and connects Dirksland with the Haringvliet. You can walk along the flower-rich quays of Dirksland’s harbour canal. The walk follows the flower-rich quays; the stated length refers to the canal. The route follows a water connection linking the town with the Haringvliet, while remaining accompanied by the flower-rich quays.
History by the Water and at the Windmill
Dirkslandse Sas was constructed in 1790 after the harbour had become too shallow for shipping due to silting. The De Eendracht windmill operated commercially as a grain mill until 1966. At Dirkslandse Sas, the focus is therefore on former shipping, while at De Eendracht it is on commercial milling. When the Blue Pennant is hoisted at the De Eendracht windmill, the miller welcomes visitors. At the windmill, the welcome is thus signalled by a visible sign.
Artwork, Fresco and Walking Route
The artwork “Bietenkaden en Bietenstort” in Dirksland consists of three rust-orange wheelbarrows depicting the movement of dumping sugar beets. A fresco of Saint Christopher can be found in the Reformed Church of Dirksland. The Christoffel walking route begins and ends on Mozartsingel in Dirksland. Because the start and finish are at the same location, the route can be planned as a circular walk. For the walk, Mozartsingel therefore remains the fixed starting and return point.
