Oudenhoorn – historic ring village with church and cycling routes
Accommodation in Oudenhoorn
Culture and history
Oudenhoorn is a historic ring village, at the centre of which stands the present-day Protestant Kerk Oudenhoorn; it dates from 1921 and is surrounded by a moat.
The Oudenhoorn memorial pin commemorates two residents who lost their lives as a result of acts of war; it is located in the garden of Kerk Oudenhoorn, north of the church.
Thus, architectural history and commemorative culture lie immediately alongside each other in the village centre: the church forms part of the present-day villagescape, while the memorial pin recalls the consequences of acts of war. Both references preserve different parts of Oudenhoorn’s history and make the village centre readable as a historic ring village.
As part of the Open Monument Day programme in Voorne aan Zee, Oudenhoorn will be one of the participating locations on 12 September 2026. The 2026 programme in Voorne aan Zee also includes walking and cycling routes along which visitors can explore the region’s history; almost all monuments are freely accessible.
The date connects the village with a regional programme that does not merely list monuments individually, but also links them to the region’s history via walking and cycling routes. For the day of the visit, both the historic village itself and other monument-related destinations are therefore included in the Voorne aan Zee programme.
Cycling
The Tour de Femmes cycling route passes through Oudenhoorn. The first section of the official Tour de Femmes route ran along the N57 and was adjusted because this provincial road cannot be used by bicycles.
The Tour de Femmes route can be followed as a self-guided cycling route across Voorne-Putten.
The route is therefore documented in two forms that are important for its classification: Oudenhoorn is part of its course, and the first official section was adjusted because the N57 is unsuitable for bicycles. Those who follow the Tour de Femmes are taking a self-guided cycling route across Voorne-Putten and encounter the connection between the route through the village and the regional route.
The cycling route adds its own perspective on the surroundings to the historical programme highlights. While the Open Monument Day routes open up the region’s history through walks and cycling tours, the Tour de Femmes describes a specific, self-guided route across Voorne-Putten.
