In the old centre of IJhorst, history stretches back to the Middle Ages: as early as 1292, there was a chapel here founded by Zwarte Water Monastery near Hasselt. Today, historic traces, woodland landscapes and paths through the Reestdal come together in IJhorst.

Nature and history in IJhorst

The Vledders and Leijerhooilanden nature area is not open to visitors. However, you can experience it from the paths along the edge and via the yellow route of the hiking trail network starting in IJhorst. The Vledders nature area lies between Staphorst and IJhorst and has a rich history in the Reestdal.

De Witte Bergen is a woodland area in IJhorst. Its hills were formed by windblown soil from the upper layer of the adjacent De Vledders area. More than a century ago, De Witte Bergen became a recreational area for the surrounding region. A viewing tower approximately 15 metres high offers views across the Reestdal.

Hiking trails with different focuses

The yellow Ywehorst Kuierroute is a cultural heritage route of 11 or 9 kilometres that runs around IJhorst. It starts at the Heerenweg car park in IJhorst, where there is also a charging station for electric cars. The two route lengths give you a practical way to choose a hiking day that suits your travel plans.

The yellow Ywehorst Kuierroute can be reached from Meppel railway station by community bus 592. Get off at the Heerenweg (Klomp) stop. Another way to combine nature and local history is the Cultuur-historische route IJhorst. It leads through nature and past buildings with a historical background, following centuries-old paths and estates. It starts opposite Heerenweg 36 in IJhorst; from there, follow the purple arrows of the hiking trail network in a northerly direction.

Woodland, views and places of remembrance

The cultural monuments also make IJhorst a destination for discoveries along the way. The wooden bell tower at Kerkweg 10 in IJhorst is a Rijksmonument. According to the Provisional List, the bell in the belfry was cast by Pieter Seest in 1780. The monument to English airmen commemorates six Allied airmen who died in the area on 23 December 1942 while fighting the occupying forces.
