History and culture in Wijhe
The Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk Nicolaaskerk at Kerkstraat 15 is one of Wijhe’s municipal Rijksmonumenten. De Waag at Langstraat 48–50 is also one of these municipal Rijksmonumenten. Both names represent different historical points of reference in the town, without implying any particular current use.
The Historische Vereniging Wijhe shares the history and cultural heritage of Wijhe and is based at Langstraat 52. On every second Saturday from September to May, it holds genealogy open days. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., volunteers answer questions about family history research. From 27 April 2026, the 2026 exhibition will also be on display. It focuses on Boerenbont crockery from the private collection of Riek Ruitenberg, as well as the cultural stories behind everyday objects.
The Wijhese Molen and De Notedop provide further historical highlights. The Wijhese Molen is the oldest octagonal windmill in the province of Overijssel and was built in 1703. De Notedop is considered the smallest house in Wijhe; A.W.C. Keijser built it onto his house in 1869 and set up a postal agency there. The artwork De Marskramer refers to Wijhe’s former trade and vibrancy. The French School in Wijhe was founded in 1862.
