The Buurserzand en Haaksbergerveen Natura 2000 area is located within the municipality of Haaksbergen in the southeast of Overijssel. Heathland, peat and designated paths

The Haaksbergerveen covers more than 590 hectares. It includes partly floating layers of peat as well as peat on a sandy substrate. These features give the area a distinctive landscape character and make it interesting for visitors who would like to explore marshland and heathland areas.

The Buurserzand combines wet heathland, woodland, small fields and dunes formed by blown sand. Various hiking and cycling routes run through the Buurserzand. This means you can explore the same natural area on foot or by bicycle, depending on how you would like to spend your day.

Please note the spatial restriction in the Haaksbergerveen: the central section is not accessible to the public. Outside this area, you can walk on the designated hiking paths.

Cycling routes combining landscape and history

The Haaksbergen Heritage Cycling Route passes through the Buurse-Haaksbergsveen and by old farmhouses in the hamlets of Brammelo, Boekelo (St. Isidorushoeve), Holthuizen, Eppenzolder, Stepelo Buurse and Langelo. For you, this route combines natural landscapes with rural village scenery in a clear succession of landscape impressions.

The “Watermolens & Noabers” cycling route starts in the centre of Haaksbergen. It follows country lanes and well-maintained cycle paths through a rural environment with meadows, winding streams, old woodlands, welcoming villages and authentic mills. The different routes help you plan a tour based on your interests in landscapes or villages.

The Haaksbergen Heritage Cycling Route is connected to Haaksbergen Town Hall, Markt 3, 7481 HT, as well as the bus station on Zeedijk in Haaksbergen.

Railways, windmills and regional culture

The Buurtspoorweg Museum presents the history of the local railway between Haaksbergen and Boekelo. A visit includes the station yard, the workshop and the locomotive shed with historic steam and diesel trains.

The Buurtspoorweg Museum also offers a ride on a genuine steam train. This allows you to experience railway history not only through buildings and trains, but also during a journey.

The De Korenbloem windmill was built in 1798. It is an octagonal gallery mill in the centre of Haaksbergen.
