Enschede combines urban history, culture and landscapes. Volkspark Enschede is the oldest public park in the Netherlands; cultural venues in the centre and natural and recreational areas represent different sides of the city. There are also historic walks and nature reserves south of Enschede.

Volkspark Enschede was established in 1872 as a recreational area for textile workers in Enschede. Pop festivals, art events and funfairs are among the events organised in the park.

An important cultural institution for Enschede and the surrounding area is the Wilminktheater and Muziekcentrum Enschede. It operates four buildings with six stages in the centre of Enschede: the Wilminktheater, the Muziekcentrum, the Grote Kerk and De Kleine Willem. Individual neighbourhoods and buildings also contribute to Enschede’s distinctive history. Huis Zonnebeek was the former residence of textile manufacturer Jan Bernard van Heek and his American wife Edwina Burr Ewing, and is a Rijksmonument. After the Vuurwerkramp, Roombeek came to be regarded as a neighbourhood of creativity and resilience.

Nature and trails around Enschede

Vliegbasis Twenthe has 130 hectares of publicly accessible natural and recreational area. South of Enschede lies Het Smalenbroek, an estate of around 85 hectares where open areas alternate with forests and wooded strips. These landscapes appeal to different interests: on the one hand, expansive natural and recreational areas; on the other, a varied alternation of open land and woodland.

A signposted hiking trail of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes starts at the main entrance to Hof Espelo. Another specific starting point is the Het Lammerinkswönner visitor centre: you can reach it via the main entrance to Ledeboerpark on Hengelosestraat in Enschede; it is about 200 metres farther along on the right-hand side of the path. The site complements the trails by providing a fixed point of reference for nature enthusiasts.

At the Het Lammerinkswönner visitor centre, NatuurEducatie of the municipality of Enschede offers information about natural history relating to quality of life and sustainability, cultural history, and flora and fauna. South of Enschede you will also find Aamsveen, a peatland area on the Dutch-German border. It includes cutover raised bog, wet swamp forests, heathland, peat extraction pits and nutrient-poor grassland. Anyone wishing to explore different types of landscape will find clear contrasts here between peatland, forest, heathland and open areas.

Historic city trails and easy orientation

Enschede railway station is well connected to the public transport network and is within walking distance of the city centre. In the city centre, the Enschede city walk takes you through beautiful, historic and lesser-known places. A guided historic city walk is also offered in Enschede every Saturday.
