The characteristic esch landscapes in Bathmen’s countryside were created in the 8th century AD through the use of sod barns. The Schipbeek waterway was made navigable in the 14th century so that agricultural products could be transported to Deventer more easily. These two landscape features give Bathmen a historical depth that becomes apparent both while travelling through the area and when consciously taking in the surroundings.

The hiking trails in Bathmen are signposted with the route markers of the Salland hiking network. The Ommetje Schipbeekroute is a 7.5-kilometre hiking trail in Bathmen. Another starting point for active days is TOP Bathmen at the corner of Brink, de Veldkamplaan and Gorsselseweg. From there, you can access cycling routes in the Salland cycling network as well as several hiking routes.

Dorpskerk and culture in the village

The monumental Dorpskerk in Bathmen has a building history dating back to around 1250. The choir and tower in their present form probably date from the 15th century. Between 10:00 and 19:00, the carillon plays automatically every quarter of an hour. In this way, the Dorpskerk combines visible architectural history with a recurring acoustic impression that adds a special cultural facet to a stay in Bathmen.

The Cultuurhuus Bathmen is a multifunctional cultural venue whose façade still bears the name BRAAKHEKKE. Its large hall, the Heeren van Dorthzaal, serves as a fully equipped theatre hall with professional lighting and sound technology. At the Cultuurhuus Braakhekke, the Cinebat film house screens films every month. This means that, alongside historic sites, Bathmen also offers an established setting for theatre and film culture.

Mills, museum and De Pothaar

The Dorthermolen is a preserved remnant of a stone octagonal flour and groat mill with an attached stone warehouse. It is connected with the history of grain milling in the Netherlands as well as with local history. The De Leeuw flour mill in Bathmen dates back to 1824 in its origins and still mills grain today.

The Boerderijmuseum and the terrace at De Pothaar are open on Wednesdays from 1 May to 30 September, from 11:00 to 16:00. De Pothaar also offers guided tours during which visitors can get to know the Lakenvelder herd. These tours cost 7.50 euros per person and can be booked for groups of ten or more.

Memorial sites in Bathmen

The war memorial in Bathmen commemorates 18 residents who lost their lives as a result of acts of war during the Second World War. In addition, 14 Struikelstenen set into the pavement commemorate 14 victims of the Second World War. These sites give local history a concrete, personal dimension and complement the visible architectural and milling heritage with the remembrance of the people of Bathmen.
