Holiday apartment in Zaandam: history, nature and theatre
Zaandam combines tangible history, unusual industrial culture and diverse experiences in nature. Between historic wooden houses, creative areas, theatre and walking routes, the town presents a multifaceted picture.
Cultural history between the Zaan and Zaanse Schans
The Czaar Peterhuisje is one of the oldest wooden houses in the Netherlands and anchors Zaandam in a distinctive architectural and local history. The Monet Atelier offers a different perspective on the past: there, you can see replicas of Monet’s 25 Zaanse paintings, which convey an impression of Zaandam in 1871. Zaanse Schans is a cultural heritage village where the 18th and 19th centuries come to life. Visitors can walk past windmills, green wooden houses, craft shops and historic industrial sites.
The Hembrugterrein combines monuments, rugged nature and creative businesses. Visitors can walk past old workshops and buildings where weapons and ammunition were once produced. The Hembrugterrein can be reached by car, bicycle, the Buurtbus and the Hempont.
Nature and exercise
The Heemtuin showcases wild plants from different parts of the Netherlands. Winding paths, a pond, an apiary and an aquarium offer different vantage points for observation and make a visit a varied nature experience. The nature playground in Zaandam features a rope raft, an observation tower, a climbing course above the water and two zip lines.
The 5.3 km “Czaar Peter & Monet” walk begins at Zaandam NS station; the starting point is at the bus station. The stated distance of 5.3 km defines a clear scope for planning the day and makes the walk easy to classify as a separate activity.
Stages, cinema and events
The cultural programme extends beyond museums and historic sites. During the theatre season, Het Zaantheater offers a varied programme featuring cabaret, musicals, opera, pop music and jazz. Cultureel Centrum Bullekerk offers concerts, performances, events and exhibitions.
The De Fabriek cinema has two modern screening rooms, a spacious café and a terrace on the Zaan. A cinema visit can therefore be combined with a break in the café or on the terrace by the Zaan. Both screening rooms have space for wheelchair users.
