Driehuis amid hiking trails and culture

Driehuis combines marked hiking trails, a dune landscape and historic sites. Marked circular hikes in the Midden-Kennemerland hiking network begin at Driehuis railway station. The 30 km Velserpad hiking route also passes through Driehuis. For day planning, the Velserpad can be treated as a 30 km hike with a fixed route framework, while the circular hikes start at the railway station.

A green hiking route from Driehuis railway station leads via the Beeckestijn estate with its beautiful manor house. The green hiking route combines exercise with a historic setting because it passes through Beeckestijn and its manor house. The manor house provides a cultural highlight along the route. Westerveld: Cemetery in the Dune Area

Westerveld Cemetery was founded in 1888. Its oldest section, opened in 1890, was laid out in the English landscape style; Zocher made use of the natural undulations of the dune area. The grounds lie in a wooded dune area and have a hilly character. At the same time, Westerveld Cemetery is one of the oldest private cemeteries in the Netherlands still in use. When walking through Westerveld, the hilly character of the grounds is immediately noticeable. During a walk, the design of the oldest section also remains visible in the landscape.

The Westerveld farmhouse, originally dating from the 16th century, still stands on Driehuizerkerkweg today. The farmhouse predates the cemetery complex founded in 1888. During a walk through Westerveld Cemetery, you can see the final resting places of notable figures such as Anthony Fokker, Multatuli, Aletta Jacobs and Hendrik Petrus Berlage. In Driehuis, the Roman Catholic Sint-Engelmundus Church was also built in 1893, based on a design by the architect A. Bruning. Visitors interested in culture can view the cemetery complex, the dune area and the resting places located there together during a walk through Westerveld.

National Park and Kennemerduinen Cycling Route

Zuid-Kennemerland National Park has an entrance in Driehuis. The 28 km Kennemerduinen cycling route also passes through Driehuis to the entrance to Heerenduinen in IJmuiden. Along this cycling route, cyclists can observe fallow deer, roe deer, Scottish Highland cattle and Konik horses. The 28 km should be taken into account when planning a day of cycling if additional time is set aside for observations along the route. Anyone planning the 28 km can include wildlife observation as part of the ride. The route leads to a national park entrance and past animal species that can be observed.

Break at Westerveld Cemetery

The Petit Café Westerveld next to the cemetery’s main entrance welcomes walkers and cyclists for coffee or lunch and is open daily.
