Marked paths and changing landscapes

The Polderspoorpad is marked with yellow-red-yellow stripes and signposted counterclockwise. It runs along the green railway embankment of the former narrow-gauge railway between Amstelveen and Uithoorn. Along the way, there are views of lakes and polders, residential areas and business parks, the town park and urban woodland, as well as greenhouses, meadows and fields.

The oude dorp route is three kilometres long and takes about an hour. It is suitable for wheelchair users up to the steps at the crossing of Koningin Maximalaan. Because the two routes offer different lengths, landscapes and connections with the town, they work well as distinct options when planning the day.

Nature between Zomp, orchard and the Amstel

The Wandeling door groen Uithoorn leads through the Tuin van Bram de Groote, the Zijdelse Zomp marsh woodland, the shorelands along the Zijdelmeer and over the towpath along the Amstel to Fort aan de Drecht. Zijdelse Zomp is a marsh woodland rich in birds; a grass snake has been recorded there. In the Tuin van Bram de Groote, the orchard contains dozens of old fruit varieties.

Several hiking and cycling routes meet at Fort aan de Drecht; the site is designated as a Toeristische Overstap Punt (TOP), or tourist transfer point. The fort was built in 1911 and is part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its gorge casemate houses an exhibition about the fort and the UNESCO-listed Stelling van Amsterdam. At Het Pannenkoekenfort, visitors can also eat pancakes in the fort.

The oude dorp route also provides access to Uithoorn's history: it passes through the old centre and the first post-war expansions in the Thamerdal district, which were developed around 1950. Several monumental trees stand along the route; it also includes the historic village centre with St Jan de Doperkerk on the Schans.

Churches and historical details

The Thamerkerk is listed in the Dutch national register of monuments as a Rijksmonument. It houses the Knipscheer organ from 1836, which was later expanded. De Hoeksteen provides a different architectural accent: the building was Gerrit Rietveld's only church design and was inaugurated in July 1965.

Activities on the Amstel

Fortvarend offers SUP courses and SUP board rentals; one launch point is located in the port of Uithoorn. Groups of five or more can reserve a BIG SUP on the Amstel through Fortvarend. For Aemstel Boating, Amsterdam is one of the destinations for boat trips departing from a mooring point on the Amstel. Several sloops are available for rent there, including models for six or eight people and a Langweerder 6.50 Classic for eight people.
