Discover Huizen: Gooimeer, Heathland and History

Huizen lies between the heathland of the Goois Natuurreservaat and Gooimeer. Its location reveals two distinct sides of the town: the open waterscape and the heathland-dominated surroundings. By the water, you can discover the shoreline landscape; in the town, historic streetscapes; and along various routes, the surrounding area by bicycle or on foot.

Cycling and Walking Routes in Huizen

Huizen Beach on Gooimeer includes the sandy Zomerkade with a gently sloping shoreline. The beach area includes a surf club, a skate park, a basketball court and a volleyball court.

The newly redesigned cycle path at Gooierhoofd is part of the Zuiderzeeroute and combined with a walking route. The Beeldenroute in Huizen takes approximately 1.5 hours by bicycle and leads through both Oude Dorp and the town's expansion districts. The approximate duration provides a manageable timeframe for planning your day on this route. At the Nautisch Kwartier, a Toeristisch Overstap Punt, bicycles and e-bikes are available for hire. The cycling route “Erfgoedrondje naar Huizen langs Naarden-Vesting” can be started from the TOP Nautisch Kwartier Huizen; it leads from Naarden-Bussum railway station via the heathland of the Goois Natuurreservaat to the former fishing village of Huizen.

The Huizer Melkmeisjeroute starts in front of the Huizer Museum and follows the folk history of Huizen through the story of a miserly farmer and a milkmaid. Along the route, which is designated as a themed route, QR codes can be scanned to discover step by step the miracle of the Huizer milkmaid from the 16th century. The route is suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and children.

Historic Huizen between the Village Centre and Harbour

The Oude Dorp has been designated as a protected village landscape. Historic structures, old farmhouses, fishermen's houses and characteristic streetscapes are still visible there. The Huizer Museum houses one of the most important Dutch collections of traditional costumes. It also houses the core collection of the Huizer pottery factory Potterie De Driehoek. Those interested in culture will find both traditional costumes and the core collection of Potterie De Driehoek at the Huizer Museum.

The Nautisch Kwartier is a nautical centre at the tip of the old Huizen harbour and conveys the impression of a former Zuiderzee village. The design of the buildings is reminiscent of a village school, a harbour café and a town hall from around 1860. De Kalkovens is a monument situated directly on the water, with views of Gooimeer, the Nautisch Kwartier and the old Huizen harbour. The historic lime kilns at De Kalkovens were originally used to burn shells from the sea into quicklime.

The Botterwerf is home to Huizen's Zuiderzee fishing heritage, represented by the town's traditional Botter fishing boats. Preserved Huizer Botters can be hired, including crew, for boat trips. The Botterwerf also includes a forge where workshops can be attended.
