Holiday apartment in Heiloo: Estates, woodland paths and culture

Heiloo can be explored through its historic estates, woodland landscapes, religious sites and museums. There are also paths for walking and cycling, as well as canoe trips on the Het Maalwater nature and recreation area.

Culture

The Witte Kerk stands on the site where the Frisians held tribal assemblies around the year 700. Since 1967, it has been listed in the Dutch Rijksmonumenten register and regularly hosts concerts, exhibitions and lectures. A permanent exhibition tells the story of Heiloo. The Archeologisch Museum Baduhenna displays a collection from a century of archaeological research in Heiloo and the surrounding area. The Toverlantaarn Museum Heiloo has more than 400 magic lanterns and associated light sources dating from 1720 to 1920.

Onze Lieve Vrouw ter Nood has a unique religious history. The site is regarded as the largest Marian pilgrimage site in the Netherlands. The six-hectare sanctuary includes the Genadekapel, the Runxputte or Mariabron, and a prayer and reflection park. The first chapel was almost certainly built towards the end of the 14th century. Landgoed Willibrordus was formerly a psychiatric institution and is now a cultural site with museums, the Verhalenkamer and the Cultuurkoepel. Boerderij Nijenburg is a historic Stolp farmhouse complex on the estate, built around 1900 and recognized as a municipal monument.

Nature

Landgoed Nijenburg and the Heilooërbos are open to the public from sunrise to sunset. The Heilooërbos offers winding paths, old trees and surprising views for walks and nature experiences. A lime tree more than 300 years old stands on the Kattenberg. The Kattenberg area also has a play area and picnic benches suitable for a family outing. A family-friendly walking route leads through the woodland of the historic Landgoed Nijenburg.

Het Maalwater, a nature and recreation area where canoe trips are also possible, lies on the northwestern edge of Heiloo. Landgoed Ter Coulster comprises an old park woodland with meadows, a tea pavilion, an ice cellar and ancient drifting dunes. In the Gemeentebos, visitors can observe animals in a relaxed setting.

Paths and activities

The VVV-Heiloo information point is located in the Verhalenkamer on the grounds of Landgoed Willibrordus. Walking excursions and cycling routes start there; Landgoed Willibrordus is also connected to the walking junction network. A pilgrimage route through Heiloo and Egmond follows in the footsteps of the Irish monk Willibrord. The Landgoederenroute is a walking trail through the Willibrordus, Ter Coulster and Nijenburg estates in Heiloo.

Heiloo has wide cycle paths along its main roads, and the railway station has spacious bicycle parking facilities. Heiloo railway station offers a train connection to Amsterdam and has OV-Fiets rental bicycles. Heiloo's golf course is a 9-hole course and has held A status from the Nederlandse Golf Federatie since November 2005. The Het Baafje outdoor swimming pool in Heiloo has a 50-metre pool.

Food and special experiences

At Het Oesdom, you can enjoy coffee, tea and treats, as well as a children's playground. Walking and cycling routes can be downloaded at the entrance using a QR code. At Atelier de Trog, visitors can reserve a high tea and take part in workshops.
