Near Diemen, the Overdiemen recreation area offers opportunities for walking and cycling along the Diem; the area features green spaces, farms and reed beds beside the water. The landscape also includes Diemer Vijfhoek, which is also known as PEN-eiland: an artificial peninsula in the IJmeer next to the power station in Over-Diemen. It is managed by Staatsbosbeheer and forms part of the network of natural areas along the IJmeer.

Routes for Active and Playful Days

Several routes focus on different experiences. The Rondje Diemerbos, marked in red, passes picnic areas, a children's play forest, bodies of water and a large sunbathing meadow. The hiking route through Diemerbos leads through the young, water-rich forest and the Banjerbossie play forest. De Omloop nature park in Diemen is a nature play area with opportunities to jump over ditches, ride on a raft and use a zip line. For longer cycling tours, the Rondje Diemerscheg is an approximately 30-kilometre bicycle route through green landscapes, along picturesque dikes and past historic highlights.

History and Culture in Diemen

The Saan Museum displays historic cars and cranes, interactive screens about the company's history, as well as quiz and game elements. The museum opens to visitors several times a year; groups can visit it by arrangement on weekend days outside the scheduled opening days. Fort Diemerdam is part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, which is protected as a UNESCO monument. Schuilkerk De Hoop is the only surviving rural schuilkerk in the Amsterdam area. Today, it is used as a wedding venue, concert hall and for other gatherings. The present-day Sint Petrus Banden church in Diemen was built in 1910 after De Hoop had become too small. The former Schuilkerk De Hoop next to Sint Petrus Banden is now a cultural centre; its architectural spatial character has been preserved. The Puur catering pavilion belonging to Fort Diemerdam is mainly used as a venue for private celebrations, corporate events and product presentations.

Places of Remembrance and Historical Traces

The Holocaust Monument in Diemen commemorates Jewish residents of Diemen who were murdered during the Second World War and have no grave; a plaque lists their names. The Stammermolen is the preserved mill stump of Gemeenschapsmolen 2, an octagonal windmill built in 1875. Since 1896, the cast-iron boundary marker has marked the former municipal boundary between Amsterdam and Diemen, and since 1998 it has been included on the Dutch list of Rijksmonumenten.
