Hortus Bulborum is a museum flower bulb garden. There, visitors can explore the garden with an expert, discover various tulips such as Rembrandt varieties and learn more about the history of Hortus Bulborum and bulb flower cultivation. Hortus Bulborum was founded in 1928 by Boschman and De Mol. The garden therefore brings together the opportunity to view various tulip varieties and the history of bulb flower cultivation.

Historic sites in Limmen

The historical timeline of Historisch Limmen consists of 26 panels and guides visitors through Limmen’s history; the presentation begins around 2750 BC. The Stichting Oud Limmen museum is located in a historic school building dating from 1862 and displays collections on the history of Limmen and bulb flower cultivation. De Museale Hoek in the southeast of Limmen comprises the school complex, the Protestantse Kerk with its churchyard, Ons Huis and Hortus Bulborum. The Protestantse Kerk at Zuidkerkenlaan 25 is a single-nave building dating possibly from the 15th century, with an incorporated late Romanesque tower. The first written mention of the Protestantse Kerk in Limmen, when Limmen was known as “Limbon”, appears in a land register dated before 800. Molen De Mol was rebuilt in 1987 as a tribute to the original De Mol grain mill from 1587, which burned down in 1916.

Circular trails for walking and cycling

During the Bloemendagen, there is a signposted village loop of approximately 8 km, beginning near the Protestantse Kerk on Zuidkerkenlaan. The Red Route Limmen is 7 km long; it begins near the Vredeburg farm from 1869 and runs along the eastern edge of the Oostergeest strandwal and the eastern edge of Westergeest, via Kapelweg and Hogeweg. Historisch Limmen also offers historical walking guides with circular walks of 6 to 10 km, as well as cycling routes of 9 to 22 km through the area around Limmen. The route lengths help distinguish between short paths and longer routes in the area around Limmen.

Culture, remembrance and beer from Limmen

Since 1974, Limmen Cultuur has organised performances, concerts, lectures and exhibitions at various locations in Limmen. The Oorlogsmonument Schoolweg Limmen marks the exact crash site of a Mosquito fighter aircraft operated by the Canadian 418e Squadron on 8 September 1944. Brouwerij Dampegheest offers brewery tours lasting 1 to 1.5 hours for groups of at least 10 people, with the opportunity to taste various Dampegheest beers.
