Achtmaal is a destination for you if you would like to combine experiences in nature with historic trails and culture. Among heathlands, forests and regional attractions, you will find short hiking trails as well as an extensive cycling route. A holiday apartment in Achtmaal provides a suitable base from which to discover the different facets of the village and its surroundings according to your own interests.

Holiday apartment in Achtmaal between heathland and culture

The Oude Buisse Heide lies between Achtmaal and Schijf. There, you can walk through old forests and along meadows, fields, waterways and farmhouses. De Reten complements this landscape with grassland, fields and heathland, connecting the Oude Buisse Heide with the De Moeren estate. You can hike across heathlands and through newly developing nature in De Reten; with a little luck, you may spot a smooth snake in the wet heathland.

The trails themselves also focus on different aspects. The Wallsteijnroute is a 2.5-kilometre circular hiking trail. The Koepelroute is a hiking trail between Schijf, Achtmaal and Zundert. The different trail lengths and routes help you adapt your daily plans to the desired extent and to further discoveries in the surrounding area.

The Gedichtenroute passes an old tea dome dating from 1840. Henriette Roland Holst used to drink tea there with her guests. The Kerkepad follows the historic path that Henriette Roland Holst always took on her way to the church in Achtmaal. Both trails combine the experience of the landscape with a specific cultural and historical story.

Church, estate and military history

The Sint Corneliuskerk is a three-aisled hall church with a front tower. It was built in 1863 in the traditional craft-based Waterstaat style and extended with a new choir in 1923–1924. The Wallsteijn estate was established around 1800 by Frederik van de Wall, bailiff of Zundert.

The Achtmaal Military History Museum focuses primarily on the liberators of the municipality of Zundert, including the American 104th Infantry Division, nicknamed the “Timberwolves”. Other topics include the events leading up to the Second World War, the May Days of 1940 and the occupation period. This gives you an additional opportunity to combine hiking and days in nature with regional history.

Cyclists have another tour available: the 52-kilometre Timberwolves Fietsroute Zuid starts at the Stichting Historisch Militair Museum in Achtmaal. If you prefer a longer route, you can give it a different emphasis when planning your days than the short circular and hiking trails around Achtmaal.
