Waspik’s Churches and Local History

Waspik offers you impressive churches, historic buildings and a variety of walking and cycling experiences. St. Bartholomeus Church was built by E. de Kruyff in the Waterstaats architectural style between 1837 and 1841. Waspik is also home to the N.H. Church, a late-Gothic cross church with a choir dating from the mid-15th century and a three-aisled pseudo-basilica nave built later in the 15th century.

Spoorhek, Sand Ridge and Town Hall

The Spoorhek in Waspik is approximately 144 metres long, dates from 1886 and is the only surviving section of the originally more than 2,000-metre-long fence along the “Halve Zolenlijn”. Also unusual is “Ode aan de zandrug”, a three-dimensional map in Waspik. It reconstructs the local sand ridge using old maps from 1895 and contour lines. Following the municipal council’s 1874 decision to construct a new building, Raadhuis Waspik was put into use in 1875 and served as the town hall for more than sixty years. In 1938, the municipality of Waspik bought, renovated and furnished the de Roon family’s villa as the new town hall.

History to Discover on Foot

Classes for girls from Waspik began at Liefdegesticht Franciscus van Sales. In 1857, the building was converted from a large farmhouse into a convent. On 8 March 1858, eight sisters from the Congregation Jezus Maria Jozef, abbreviated to J.M.J., began their work in Waspik there. The local history society “Op ’t Goede Spoor” offers a guided historical walking tour through the centre of Waspik. Important sites and buildings in the village are introduced along the way. The tour lasts approximately 1½ to no more than 2 hours and includes an interior visit to one of the two churches in the centre: the Bartholomeuskerk or the Nederlands Hervormde kerk. The Dorpswandeling Waspik ends at Den Bolder.

Cycling through the Historic Langstraat

Waspik has four Attentiestenen, linked via QR codes to the “Op pad in de historische Langstraat” cycling and walking route. This cycling route connects Waspik with the historic village centres of Capelle, Spang, Vrijhoeve, Besoijen, Waalwijk and Baardwijk. Another cycling route to Second World War monuments passes through Waalwijk, Sprang-Capelle and Waspik. It explains 22 monuments and memorials and can be cycled year-round.
