Discover Berlicum: History, Nature and Culture

Berlicum combines traces of history with landscape and art. Seldensate, De Wamberg, the Aa and the Het Groene Woud National Landscape Park stand alongside mountain-bike routes, sandy paths, studios and cultural events, representing the different facets of the area.

History between memorial sites and country estates

At the Berlicum war memorial, a stone memorial column stands in Processiepark on Sassenheimseweg in Berlicum, in the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel. It commemorates 44 residents of Berlicum and Middelrode who lost their lives as a result of acts of war between 1940 and 1946. Seldensate comprises a site surrounded by a moat, with the ruins of a late-medieval castle and a gatehouse. De Wamberg country estate in Berlicum has a history dating back to the late Middle Ages and contains numerous monumental buildings and landscape features.

At De Wamberg, forests, avenues, ponds and expansive vistas shape the landscape. A mill stood at Hoornwerk De Wamberg on this site in 1629. A little farther south, the Aa was dammed in 1629 at the spot where it still flows today.

Cycling routes, sandy paths and nature experiences

The Aa valley near Berlicum includes an area with marked mountain-bike routes. The Berlicum mountain-bike route is classified as a blue, moderately difficult route and runs through the Het Groene Woud National Landscape Park. Meadows, streams, rivers and forests line the route. For a more leisurely outing, the Ommetje Seldensate follows sandy paths; depending on the season, flowering plants can be seen there. Hikers can also experience the rich flora and fauna of Seldensate country estate in Berlicum.

Culture, art and events

The Heemkundekring De Plaets promotes knowledge of the local history and heritage of Berlicum, Middelrode and Kaathoven. It organises lectures, shows slides and films, publishes cycling and walking routes, and offers guided tours of village monuments with explanations. In centrally located Berlicum, the Beneluxtheater is a versatile event venue with a varied programme of performances. Organic works of art are created at the Juul Rameau artists' studio, focusing on the connection between people and nature; the studio specialises in designing and producing sculptures and objects made of Corten steel for indoor and outdoor use. In summer, the works of art from Atelier Achteraf are displayed throughout the garden and studio, and many are available for purchase.

Excursions for different interests

The Berenpad in Berlicum is a 600-metre walking path specially designed for people with dementia. Footpath tiles featuring bear motifs refer to “de Beer van Balkum”, the symbol of Berlicum. Kamelenmelkerij Smits offers excursions, group safaris and children's birthday parties for individuals and groups.

Annual events

The weekly market in Berlicum takes place on Wednesdays from 08:00 to 12:00. The fair is held from Saturday to Tuesday around the third Sunday in September.
