Experience Van Gogh in Nuenen

Nuenen combines Vincent van Gogh’s life and surroundings with special experiences for curious visitors. At the Van Gogh Village Museum, the permanent exhibition explores Van Gogh’s time in Nuenen and presents his first masterpiece, “The Potato Eaters”, in a film. An admission ticket gives you access to the museum, Vincents Lichtlab and the temporary exhibition. At the Lichtlab, visitors can experiment with various lighting techniques. The free treasure hunt “Op zoek naar Vincent”, available in Dutch, English, French and German, offers a playful way to explore. Paths between village and countryside

Nuenen can also be explored on foot via a range of differently designed routes. The guided “Dorpswandeling” through Nuenen takes place on Saturdays and Sundays and is approximately 1.5 km long. The guided “Natuurwandeling” leads through the countryside around Nuenen associated with Van Gogh and is approximately 3.5 km long. The self-guided route booklet “Op pad met Vincent” leads to 20 information panels relating to Vincent van Gogh. The first hiking route in Van Gogh National Park passes through Nuenen and goes by several Van Gogh monuments. Nuenens Broek is a wet woodland area with very damp soil, abundant alder and willow trees, and hiking trails through the nature reserve. The Hooidonkse Beek adds a distinctive landscape feature: it crosses Nuenen from southeast to northwest, flows into the Dommel at Hooidonk, drops by more than 7 metres and therefore flows almost constantly. The Hooydonkse molen is a watermill powered by the waters of the Dommel and dating from the 12th century. From the bridge over the mill channel, you can enjoy a view of the Hooydonkse Watermolen. The Dorpslinde is also one of the area’s notable historic references; it is associated with the planting year 1632.

Cycling and enjoying regional specialities

For longer explorations, the approximately 49 km “Van Gogh fietsroute Nuenen” connects highlights in and around Nuenen, including the Van Gogh Village Museum, the Van Gogh Kerkje and the house associated with “The Potato Eaters”. Just outside Nuenen, the “Van Gogh-Roosegaarde fietspad” runs between the Opwettense and Collse Watermolen. Its interplay of light and colour is inspired by “The Starry Night”. Culinary experiences are also part of the cycling adventure: “’t Nuenens Zuivelhuisje” is a stop on the culinary cycling route where visitors can find fresh milk from the tap, homemade cheese and eggs. The “Fiets en proef van Brabantse bodem” cycling tour runs for 21.6 km through Nuenen.
