Holiday apartment in Vlijmen: Discover nature trails and history
Vlijmen between moorland and history
A holiday apartment in Vlijmen offers you a stay amid rare landscapes, historic buildings and varied trails. In Vlijmens Ven, De Moerputten and along the Zuiderwaterlinie, you will find various opportunities for active days; historic sites and activities for children round off the destination.
Nature trails through Vlijmens Ven and De Moerputten
The hiking route through Vlijmens Ven leads across wet heath grassland, which is rare in the Netherlands. It also features a species-rich plant life and colourful meadows in spring. De Moerputten is the only habitat of the rare dusky large blue butterfly in the Netherlands – a special point of interest for anyone who pays attention to landscapes and wildlife while hiking.
Access to De Moerputten is at Venkantbrug on Heidijk in Vlijmen. You can hike across the restored, 600-metre-long Moerputten railway bridge and along wooden boardwalks through the moorland. The Boswachterspad Bruggenroute Moerputten also leads over unpaved paths, stairs and a wooden footbridge. This allows you to combine nature experiences with different types of trail surfaces.
History along the Zuiderwaterlinie
On the Plein in Vlijmen stands a V-shaped monument unveiled in 2022. It commemorates the V1 bombs that struck Vlijmen several times in the final months of the Second World War. Its simple form connects a visible place in the townscape with an episode from local history.
Vlijmen forms part of the ’s-Hertogenbosch–Heusden defence line of the Zuiderwaterlinie. The Vlijmen route of the Zuiderwaterlinie begins at the old town hall on the front side of the municipal office building in Julianastraat. You can park in Van Greunsvenpark for this route; access is via Julianastraat.
Church, brewery and listed ensembles
The Grote Kerk in Vlijmen has a single-nave nave from the 14th century, with traces of pointed-arch windows on the south side. Another section dates from the 13th century and was raised with a bell stage in the 15th century. The church also contains four text panels from 1659.
The De Valk brewery complex is now a Rijksmonument; the brewing vessels have been preserved. The De Valk brewery was located at Meliestraat 20/22. At Molenhoek, a listed ensemble consisting of three wooden electricity pylons remains.
The De Langstraat street also represents Vlijmen’s historic character: it includes 17 Rijksmonumenten and 7 municipal monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as the early 20th century.
Active and family-friendly days
De Hoge Heide offers bowling, indoor football, interactive darts, floorshuffle, a sjoelbak bar and squash. There is also a fenced playground for children. Another excursion destination is the Het Engelermeer swimming lake, located between the meadows of Vlijmen and the Engelen polder.
