Holiday apartment in Mierlo: Heathland, culture and cherry-growing tradition

Sang en Goorkens is located in the immediate surroundings of the village of Mierlo. Flower-rich meadows, alder carr woodland and peat cuttings are part of a centuries-old cultural landscape with hedgerow structures. Rondje 't Sang is a signposted walking route approximately 2.8 kilometres long. The Heideakkerroute starts at Heezerweg in Mierlo. From there, it passes through the forest along a special part of the Strabrechtse Heide. Its 4.5-kilometre route runs alongside extensive areas of common and bell heather. The two routes therefore have different focal points: Rondje 't Sang combines the signposting and approximate length of 2.8 kilometres with the surroundings of Sang en Goorkens, while the Heideakkerroute starts at Heezerweg and leads through the forest to extensive heathland areas. In this way, wetland features and alder carr woodland are contrasted with a route whose character is shaped by forest and heathland.

History and culture in the village

The British war cemetery in Mierlo commemorates 665 Allied soldiers of the British Commonwealth who died on Dutch territory in September and November 1944. The cemetery is protected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

In the centre of Mierlo stands the Standerdmolen Mierlo. It dates from 1640. Historically, it could be visited almost every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; a miller present there explained how the mill worked. This time information describes an earlier visiting opportunity and is not relevant to visits today. The St. Lucia Church in the Sint Luciakerk complex, designed by H.J. van Tulder, is also part of the village’s culture.

't Patronaat is both a theatre and a cinema. Its auditorium contains an authentic stage dating from 1920. The venue therefore combines its present-day dual function with a specific historical detail of the auditorium. Alongside the historic windmill construction and the church, a venue serving both theatrical and cinematic purposes is thus also part of Mierlo’s local culture.

Cherry-growing tradition in Mierlo

Cherries have been grown in Mierlo since as early as 1100. The Mierlose Zwarte Kers is officially regarded as an independent variety or species. The local cherry-growing tradition is therefore documented not only by its long history, but also through a specifically named cherry. It complements the architectural and commemorative heritage with an agricultural aspect.
