Holiday apartment in Breda – Culture, Nature and Historic Routes

The Grote Kerk Breda is a 15th-century church. Nine members of the Nassau family and the first Prince of Orange found their final resting place there. At the Stedelijk Museum Breda, the permanent exhibitions “De Nassaus van Breda – Kasteel, stad en land” and “Ambitie & Verlangen – Breda in de 19de eeuw” present further aspects of the city’s history. The museum is located in one of Breda’s oldest buildings.

Culture

The Breda Beguinage also combines a historic atmosphere with special collections. It has a well-maintained herb garden with 300 different types of herbs. The Beguinage Museum is located in one of the houses of the Breda Beguinage; the Poortgebouw houses the Miniature and Dollhouse Museum. Valkenberg Park offers another historic connection: until 1812, it served as a castle garden for the Lords of Breda. At the same time, Valkenberg Park is a green oasis in the middle of Breda’s city centre.

Breda is also home to the Blind Walls Gallery, an open-air museum with a growing collection of more than 140 murals by international artists. Each mural is based on a story from Breda that is connected to its respective location. The individual works are therefore each linked to their urban surroundings, without the collection being limited to a single historical period.

Green Spaces

The Mastbos forest was established more than 500 years ago by Hendrik III van Nassau. People walk, cycle, exercise and relax in the Mastbos. Kasteel Bouvigne is located on the edge of the Mastbos; the three castle gardens of Bouvigne are laid out in the French, English and German styles.

The Markdal is a nature area between the Belgian border and the south of Breda, in the catchment area of the River Mark. In the Markdal, you can hike and cycle along attractive paths beside the River Mark. This means that the area has both a clearly described geographical location and specific opportunities for hiking and cycling.

Water and Nature

Asterdplas is a recreational lake in the Haagse Beemden north of Breda. You can swim, surf, sail and relax there. The wet transitional area next to Asterdplas provides a habitat for many bird species. The Singels of Breda offer another perspective on the water and can be explored by boat.

Routes

For historic impressions on foot, there is Explore Royal Breda, a 3.9 km-long historic walking route through Breda. The route collection of Explore Breda includes nature, creative and accessible routes. Those who associate Breda with cycling and an artist’s name will find the 33 km-long Van Gogh cycling route, which leads to Van Gogh highlights in and around Breda.

The city centre also remains manageable in size: you can walk across Breda’s city centre from one side to the other in about 15 minutes. This means that within the city, a short crossing on foot exists alongside longer themed routes through history, nature and creativity.

Getting There

Trains stop at Breda railway station. There is also a bus station for local and regional buses, secure bicycle storage facilities and an OV-Fiets bicycle rental service. These facilities are part of the station and connect rail services with local and regional buses, as well as various bicycle options.
