Ommel has been a Marian pilgrimage site since the 15th century. When choosing a holiday apartment in Ommel, it therefore makes sense to focus on the themes that shape the village: religious history, walks and landscape experiences. This allows you to plan your trip around cultural experiences, outdoor activities and observing nature.
Pilgrimage and visible village history
Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Ommel is an ivory relief from the 11th century depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary. This historical detail particularly appeals to visitors who include religious art in their travel plans.
The “Ommel War Plaque” was erected on the church square in Ommel in 2009 and commemorates 12 residents of Ommel who died during the occupation as a result of acts of war.
The former temporary church in Ommel served as a church from 1945 to 1963; original features such as the confessional are still preserved. The building is now a private home and is listed as a municipal monument. Ommel’s large guilds procession takes place every year on the third Sunday in May.
Forest, water and observing nature
The Oostappense woods are an area rich in birdlife. Crested tits, treecreepers, coal tits and goldcrests are frequently seen there; roe deer have also been regularly spotted in the woods. The Oostappense woods are part of the hiking trail network.
The Astense Aa meanders for 2 kilometres through an area in Ommel.
Routes for different day plans
The Ommels Ommetje is a short, 3-kilometre walk through the centre of Ommel that presents the village’s history from the past to the present. The route combines exercise and local history in a manageable circular walk.
A red, 5-kilometre route to the Astense Aa starts in Asten-Ommel at the end of Busserdijk. The 7-kilometre route from Ommel to Oostappense Heide leads into a former area of drifting sand, where a small remnant of drifting sand remains and heathland can also be found.
For cyclists, the “Rondje Asten” cycle route also passes through Ommel.
Holiday apartment and day planning
When choosing a holiday apartment in Ommel, you can tailor your preferred daily rhythm to the themes in the area: pilgrimage and culture, a brief history of the village, observing nature or longer routes. The different route lengths make it easier to organise plans for individual days, even if you are travelling with children or in a group and not everyone wants to take the same trip. This allows you to shape your stay according to your interests, combining local history, forest, water and cycling.
