At Schildmeer near Steendam, you can go kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and swimming. The beach at Schildmeer has a jetty from which you can jump into the water. A stay by the water can therefore combine exercise on the lake with time on the shore.
The paths around Steendam also offer various options. In the area around Steendam, the 750-metre-long Knuppelpad runs through the moorland of ’t Roegwold as a wooden boardwalk. The Knuppelpad circular route is approximately 2 kilometres long from the car park. There is also an approximately 14-kilometre-long cycling and walking path around Schildmeer. The different route lengths make it easier for you to plan a shorter walk or a more extensive circuit.
’t Roegwold stretches from Kolham via Slochteren and Schildwolde to Schildmeer. In the area around Steendam, the area is suitable for walking and cycling and is popular with birdwatchers. The moorland thus complements the water experiences with a nature-oriented perspective.
Golf, Architectural Heritage and Regional History
The Groningse Golfclub Duurswold offers a 9-hole course and a 6-hole par-3 course. There are also golf lessons and clinics with three experienced PGA professionals. The golf course therefore provides another opportunity to combine a stay in Steendam with a sporting activity.
Along the Damsterweg in Steendam stand labourers’ cottages dating from around 1920 and middle-class houses from the 1930s. The Keerschutsluis Haanssluis is also located in the area around Steendam. It is a Rijksmonument from the 19th century and was built by farmer De Haan in the Haansvaart. Both places give the exploration of the landscape and paths a cultural and historical context.
