Lutjegast combines Abel Tasman history with a landscape of sandy ridges, lowlands, woodland strips and traces of earlier land use. A holiday apartment in Lutjegast can therefore be the starting point for a variety of days out: cultural discoveries, walks and observations of the landscape can be considered equally worthwhile interests. Key themes include the Abel Tasman Museum, Lutje Batavia, historic paths and the Abel Tasman Route.

Abel Tasman and local history

The church at Abel Tasmanweg 75 contains a 17th-century pulpit with the Prott coat of arms on the pulpit front, as well as a covered lord's pew from the 18th century. De Baak is an almost 7-metre-high work of art made from glacial boulders by artist Rob Schreefel. The Torenkerk in Lutjegast dates from 1877 and stands on the same site as its predecessor church.

The Abel Tasman Museum presents the life and voyages of discovery of the seafarer Abel Tasman in his birthplace, Lutjegast. Visitors can learn more about his region of birth, the present-day contacts with the cultures of the island countries visited by Tasman, and the history of land and sea in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Lutje Batavia is an open-air information and educational site about Lutjegast, Abel Tasman, his voyages and the surrounding nature.

Paths with traces of landscape and history

Lutje Batavia is the starting point for an exploration of Lutjegast and for the walking trails of Lutjegast Buiten. At the former site of Rikkerdaborg, the outlines of the moats have been preserved. At the beginning of the Rikkerdapad, an information board marks the location of the former access road to the castle. The Rikkerdapad starts at the listed Rikkerda farm dating from 1848 and offers views of the grounds of the former Rikkerdaborg.

The Hooge Reed walking trail begins in the municipality of Grootegast, southwest of the village of Lutjegast, at the Bombay. Traces of former houses can still be seen in the landscape along the trail. The paths are therefore intended not only for exercise in nature, but also for visitors who wish to connect the landscape with historical traces.

Sandy ridges, lowlands and cultural landscape

The oldest part of Lutjegast is the Abeltasmanweg, which lies on a narrow sandy ridge. South of the sandy ridge between Lutjegast and Grootegast is a small-scale cultural landscape with meadow bird areas and woodland strips. The landscape around Lutjegast contains peat and, in places, clay deposits, as well as numerous peat cuttings created by peat extraction.

The Abel Tasman Route begins in Lutjegast, the birthplace of the 17th-century explorer of Tasmania and New Zealand. It includes a very narrow bridge and a hand-operated ferry for crossing the Wolddiep. The route also passes through a small-scale landscape with woodland strips along the parcel boundaries on the ridges and open pastures in the lowlands between them.

A place for different discoveries

Groene Dorpsploats is intended for everyone, including people who do not live in Lutjegast. It has an adventure trail with a willow tunnel and a farm with edible wild berries. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore weigh up whether historical themes, paths through the landscape or nature-based experiences should be the focus of your stay.
