Holiday apartment in Uithuizen: Menkemaborg, churches and cycle route

Uithuizen combines medieval churches, historic architectural styles, Menkemaborg, a reconstructed garden and a cycle route with a variety of stops. The historical range in Uithuizen extends from churches and an organ to a windmill, farmhouses and a cycle route. The historic sites in Uithuizen can be viewed as a transition between sacred interiors, rural architecture, garden art and cycle paths.

Churches, organ and historic architecture

The Jacobikerk in Uithuizen was built in its present form between 1225 and 1250. The chancel vault of the Dionysiuskerk contains paintings from the 15th century. Together, the two churches trace a path from a medieval building phase to a later, pictorially oriented interior.

Huize Tocama also broadens the view of the village’s architectural history. The building is probably a cross-shaped farmhouse complex dating from the 19th century, with a neck gable, main barn and auxiliary barn. During a renovation in 1914, Huize Tocama acquired its present eclectic design. The present windmill De Liefde was built in 1866, when an earlier post mill was demolished and replaced by a new tower mill with a stage. Uithuizen is also home to the Arp Schnitger organ, which has 28 stops. Visiting the village therefore involves moving between interiors, architectural forms and outdoor paths.

Menkemaborg and garden

Menkemaborg was built in the 14th century. The garden west of Menkemaborg was reconstructed according to the original garden plan from around 1705. The garden complements a visit to the building with time outdoors, while remaining closely connected to Menkemaborg.

Menkemaborg can be reached on foot from Uithuizen railway station in 10 minutes. Tickets for Menkemaborg can be purchased at the door; advance reservations are not required.

Cycle route and pilgrims’ walk

The “Wealth as far as the eye can see” cycle route starts and ends at Menkemaborg in Uithuizen. It passes impressive farmhouses, medieval churches and manor houses. The fixed starting and ending point makes orientation easier when planning the day, while the different stops provide a change between architectural history and rural impressions. The circular route connects several building types along a fixed course.

Uithuizen also has a pilgrims’ walk, on which at least one medieval church can be visited. Alongside the cycle route, this offers another way to experience the village through sacred buildings and a circular walk. Depending on the desired pace of the day, longer cycling stages and culture-oriented walks can be considered separately. The pilgrims’ walk is an independent walk with a sacred focus.
